Stop A Tantrum In Its Tracks

by Kathy T.

As a parent, nothing is more embarrassing than taking your toddler out of your home, only for them to act like a crazed baboon. The last time we took my nephew to a restaurant was last October, and he threw the most ridiculous tantrum ever. Needless to say, we’re waiting for him to get a little older and learn some more manners before doing that again. The best way to stop a tantrum in public is by cutting back on them in private. If your kid doesn’t throw fits in your house, they won’t do it at the store. So, how do you stop tantrums before they even begin? Check out this post by Vicky at Mess For Less for tips:

-Distraction- Say “I’ve got something to show you!” It will stop the tears and make them forget why they were upset.

-Count to three- if they don’t stop crying by the time you get to three, they go to time out.

-Remove an item or privilege if they don’t stop

-Take deep breaths with them, give them a hug.

-Last ditch option: walk away and let them cry it out in their room.

Tantrums are a normal part of growing up, and every kid has them. You need to remember that you are not a horrible parent if your child is acting out; they are just learning how to express themselves (or they are just trying to get attention). By modeling the correct reactions to disappointment and showing them that tantrums are unacceptable, they will learn that screaming and crying gets them nowhere.

Wedding Gifts You Will Actually Use

by Kathy T.

If you’re getting married soon and about to expand your shak, then this post is for you. My best friend is getting married in October, and I’m her maid of honor, so I’ve been helping her plan everything for the past year or so. One thing that we’ve been working on is her wedding registry. There are tons of lists out there that tell you things you “absolutely must have”. But let’s get real- when was the last time anyone in this century used plate chargers, a gravy boat, or a pasta maker? Aim for quality pieces that you know you’ll use more than once a year. Check out this post by Christine Lu at Apartment Therapy for items that she actually uses five years later. Bonus- you can also use this for ideas if you are shopping for a friends registry:

-A knife block- one of the most easily accessible and most used things in the kitchen

-A heavy duty garbage can

-Nice linens

-Oven-to-table bakeware

-Storage bins

-Cordless drill and other tools

New Years Resolutions For Moms

by Kathy T.

Most of us have New Years Resolutions that we repeat every year, but that usually never happen. Lose weight, quit bad habits, save more money, etc. But what if, instead of focusing on “negative” things we’d like to change, we instead decided to embrace positivity? I love this post by Kara at The Joys of Boys- she has made a list of New Years Resolutions that every Mom should try to do this year:

-Let go of “Mom Guilt”- no one is perfect, even Moms. Forgive yourself and move on.

-Enjoy what you have- make a list of what you are grateful for, and look at it / add to it every day

-Schedule “me time” daily

-Stop determining your worth by a number on a scale- you will be healthier and happier, and raise kids that are healthier and happier

Christmas Activities For Kids

by Kathy T.

Some of my best memories as a kid come from the holidays: singing with my cousins, waiting for Santa at night but always falling asleep, playing in the snow, eating Christmas cookies, driving to my Grandma’s house with my family, the list goes on. Christmas is the perfect time to create some long lasting, happy childhood memories. Here are some of my ideas that you can do with your kids to help get them into the holiday spirit:

-Go visit Santa at the mall, get pictures taken

-Drive around and look at lights

-Shop for/make gifts together for friends and neighbors

-Bake cookies, leave some out for Santa

-Sing Christmas songs; go caroling

-Play in the snow: have a snowball fight, make snowmen and snow angels

-Volunteer, donate, and get into the spirit of giving

-Make a gingerbread house

-Make ornaments (there are tons of cute ideas on Pinterest!)

-Decorate a Christmas tree

-See a live nativity scene or play

-Learn about holidays from other cultures and religions

-Watch Christmas movies

-Mail cards together

-Elf on the Shelf (if that’s your thing)

-See the Nutcracker ballet performed

-Start and keep track of an advent calendar

-Make paper snowflakes

-Drink hot chocolate

-Go to your town’s local holiday parade

-Spend time with friends and family

End Yelling Today

by Kathy T.

No one wants to be the mom who is constantly screaming at her kids in public. We’ve all seen it, and we’ve all judged her. But, what happens if your kids just don’t listen unless you yell? Some kids just honestly don’t take their parents seriously unless they bring out the big guns. Whether it’s a discipline problem, or just a personality problem, it’s still extremely frustrating for parents who don’t know what else to do. For tips on how to get your kids to listen- without yelling- check out this post by Ariadne Brill at Positive Parenting Connection:

-Set limits early, and stick to them so it doesn’t progress to shouting matches

-Ask questions that invite cooperation- instead of yelling “WHY HAVEN’T YOU BRUSHED YOUR TEETH YET? WHERE ARE YOUR SHOES?”, ask “What else do you need to do to get ready?”

-Connect before making a request- physically get down on their level, make eye contact, and speak kindly to them.

Cute “Kid Date” Ideas

by Kathy T.

I think the most important part of raising kids, after making sure they are healthy, safe, and educated, is to make sure they are happy and have great childhood memories. One way to do this is by doing unique things with your kids, like taking them new places and planning new activities. There are all kinds of “kid date” ideas out there, for moms and daughters, dads and sons, moms and sons, etc. Here are some of my favorites from Nicolette at the How Does She blog:

-Go to the pet store

-Go out for icecream

-Go somewhere and take pictures in a photo booth (malls and theaters sometimes have them)

-Zoo or aquarium

-Have a beauty day- go and get pedicures or your hair done

-Go to the park / playground, feed ducks, go on a hike

Great Conversation Sparkers For Kids

by Kathy T.

My nephew is almost two years old, and just learning to talk. And he loves it! He chats and chats all day long- always pointing at things around the house and naming them, and constantly talking about whatever comes into his mind. His mom is also very extroverted- and I have no doubt that he’ll end up the same way. However, for older kids that are a little shyer, or for when “how was your day?” gets old and stale, you may need to start the conversation for them. That’s why I love this post by Lara Neves at Overstuffed Life! It has a list of conversation starters to use with any kid. They’re great for dinner conversation, long car trips, or getting to know groups of students or scout troops. Check out some of my favorites:

What book are you reading? Tell me about it.

If you had $1,000, what would you do with it?

Tell me your favorite joke

What is your favorite song right now?

What is your favorite season, and what do you like most about it?

Road Trips With Toddlers

by Kathy T.

This Thanksgiving, I’m going up to Kentucky with my entire family to spend the day. That means I’ll be sitting in a car for two hours with an almost-2-year-old. Usually, he’s a great car rider. He likes to look out the window, talk, and sleep. But of course, he’s at that age where he gets a little antsy and wants to get out of his seat- especially on long trips. If you’re going even further this weekend, you’ll need to read this article by JJ at the Belly Itch Blog for tips on keeping toddlers happy in the car:

-Set clear expectations for behavior

-Make sure electronics are fully charged

-Bring plenty of snacks, and eat often- they are a great distraction and keep away hungry crankiness

-Bring a goodie bag filled with games and activities

You’re Pregnant! Now What?

by Kathy T.

Most people are aware that when you find out that you’re pregnant, you should immediately make a doctor’s appointment and throw out the cigarettes. Then, you maybe tell the father and close family/friends. Other than that, there’s not much else, right? Wrong! There are plenty of things you should probably start doing- for your health, the baby’s, and for the future. Check out this post by Chelsea Johnson at Life With My Littles for things you should do when you find out you’re pregnant:

-Wait until the end of the first trimester before you tell anyone outside of immediate family

-Document your pregnancy! Take lots of pictures and keep a journal!

-Use lotion EVERYWHERE and use it early

-Find a workout plan that works for you and stick to it

-Start taking a prenatal vitamin

-Check all your medications/talk with your doctor to see if you should continue them.

Ways To Show Your Kids You Love Them

by Kathy T.

I’m a firm believer in the idea that spending too much time with a kid can never spoil them (spending too much money can, though). Kids absolutely have to know that they have a safe home with loving parent(s) to have normal, healthy mental development. And you don’t have to buy them a $200 bicycle, or a brand new Xbox to show that you love them. It can be as simple as reading a book together, or giving them a hug. What kids crave more than anything is quality time with their parents (until they become teenagers, anyway, haha.) Check out this list by Amanda at Dirt and Boogers for ways you can connect with your child today:

-Tell them you love them every day.

-Physically get down to their level, make eye contact when talking.

-Ask questions about their stories

-Put away the phone and computer

-Play WITH them instead of watching them play. Dance, wrestle, sing, get messy, go outside, have fun!

-Hug them every day
