DIY Dog Food?

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

16045073358_9a5dfa488d_zI can honestly say I’ve never met anyone who has cooked their own dog food. To me, it sounds intimidating, time consuming, and expensive. However, this recipe by Emily at Emily’s Little Homestead is anything but. It’s made from fresh ingredients, all prepared at once, and will last your dog for two weeks. If you are concerned about what you are putting into your dog’s body, then this recipe is for you! Here’s what you need:

2 lbs ground pork

2-2.5lbs ground beef

1 large sweet potato

1 large apple, cored

2 carrots (or 8 baby carrots)

1 c. kale

1/2 c. blueberries (fresh or frozen)

1 c. rice

1 1/2 c. water

How Smart Is Your Dog?

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

I love my dogs, but they are really dumb. They know they’re dumb, I know it, and everyone else knows it. Bless their hearts. Some people have smart dogs, though! Maybe they know lots of tricks, can solve puzzles quickly, come when their name is called, obey commands– they are lots of ways to know that your dog is smart. However, if you’re looking for a fun way to actually test your dog and find out exactly HOW smart he is, check out this doggie IQ test by Positive Med:

-Throw a towel over them and see how long it takes them to get free

-Get three buckets or bowls. Show your dog that you have put a treat under one of them. Then, see if they can find which bowl has the treat.

-Go for a walk. Pick up your keys and the leash at an irregular time and see if your dog gets excited

-See if your dog responds to his name or other language commands

Doggie Cupcake Recipe

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

14060646673_3d61d3e08d_zI’ve never been a crazy dog person. I like dogs; I think they’re cute. But people who buy little outfits for their dogs, throw doggie birthday parties and weddings, and bring their dogs everywhere honestly weird me out, haha. I guess it’s because I’m more of a cat person.

However, when I saw these adorable doggie birthday cupcakes by Carlee at The Little Sloth, I admit I may have squealed a little. I mean come on, they’re so cute! And 100% dog friendly. If you feel like celebrating a birthday or other event with your pooch, here’s the recipe. All you need is:

Recipe:
1/2 cup oatmeal
1 cup flour
1/4 applesauce
1/4 cup honey
1/4 peanut butter
1 tsp baking soda
1 egg
Topping:
Peanut butter
Bone pieces from dog food

Dogs And The 8 Hour Work Day

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

12924396364_43ce0ca84a_zI used to think that unless you worked from home, were a stay at home parent, were on different schedules than your roommates, or were unemployed/retired, there’s no way you could have a dog. After all, they DO have to be let out every couple of hours. Plus, you need to have at least 1 acre of fenced in property for the dog to run around in.

However, there are still ways to be a responsible dog owner if you’re out of the house for eight hours a day. Check out this post by Lorna Ladd at the Dog for Dog Blog for tips on how you can work full time, and still come home to a happy, healthy pooch:

-Send your dog to doggie daycare!

-Hire a dog walker to walk your pet daily (or have a pee pad / bathroom area in your home)

-Give them a bone to chew on, or a dental chew toy

-Make sure your dog can look outside through doors/windows

-Add a new chew toy every once in a while

-Get another dog, so she has company while you’re gone all day

How To Give Your Dog A Pill

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

15633818714_75938fe113_zIf your pooch is sick, it can also be really stressful for you. Having to clean up accidental messes, worrying about their health, and having to wrestle the medicine into their mouths can be pretty overwhelming. If you’re lucky, you can just throw the pill in with the dog food, and your dog will just gobble it up. For my dogs, we’d wrap the pill in a slice of American cheese and give it to them. The dogs happily ate it up, and thought they were getting a treat.

If your dog is super picky, however, you might need to get a little more creative. This post by Lynne at 365 Days of Baking and More came up with an awesome solution- DIY dog “pill pockets” made out of peanut butter, milk, and flour. Check out her recipe here:

-Create a dough out of all ingredients

-Roll into 12 small balls

-Add an indentation for the pill (using the tip of a meat thermometer or a straw)

-Store in the fridge
