Types of Herb Gardens

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

13525425615_ef1d4b6ea6_zIf you’re like me, you probably thought there was only one type of herb garden, right? A garden with herbs- usually delicious ones like basil, dill, oregano, and cilantro for cooking. However, there are SO many more uses for herbs than just cooking! They can be medicinal, used for aromatherapy, made into tea, or even just look pretty for aesthetic purposes. Check out this awesome list by The Herbal Academy for totally fresh herb garden ideas + what to plant in them. Here are some I’m considering:

-Medicinal garden- plant lavender, St. John’s wort, chamomile, echinacea, ginger, catnip, and rosemary.

-Tea garden- mints, roses, raspberry, nettles, chamomile.

-Bee/Butterfly garden- bee balm, sage, lemon balm, calendula, fennel.

There are also ideas for a moonlight garden, a salad garden, a dyer’s garden, an insect-repelling garden, and of course, the classic culinary herb garden!

Rainy Day Activity Ideas- No Screens Involved

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

34370250005_52199c5b1b_zI don’t know where you’re from, but where I live, it’s been raining pretty much every day of Spring so far. There have been a few sunny days, but my niece and nephew get tired of being cooped up in the house and watching TV after maybe a day or two. So, I’m always trying to think of new things for us to do- that DON’T involve phones, tablets, or TV screens. That’s why I love this list by Lisa Jacobson at Club31 Women! Here are some awesome ideas for screen-free indoor activities:

-Play a game of hide and seek

-Cook a meal together

–Make sparkly playdough  and then play with it, or any other craft! Get on Pinterest- there are a MILLION cool crafts for kids.

-Read a good book

-Built a fort together

-Draw, paint, or color

How To Actually STICK To Your Budget

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

33887741275_22bc30a37a_zNo matter how much money you make, the first step to saving more money is to create a budget. Budgets are easy to make- all you do is list out your expenses for the month- rent/mortgage, utility bills, insurance, car payment, gas, food- all the essentials- as well as things that you like to spend a little extra on- clothes, makeup, entertainment, video games, etc. It’s important to have fun built into your budget, so you don’t go crazy and splurge without planning! Then, you examine your expenses against your income. Any you have left over will go into your savings. (If you don’t have any left over, you need to go over your expenses and see where you can cut.)

Now, this is all good in theory. However, while I think I’m good at making budgets, I’m definitely not good at sticking to them. I’ll follow it for a month, or maybe two, and then just go back into my old ways of overspending. That’s why I was interested to read this article by Caroline at CarolineVencil.com. She has a lot of great tips on actually staying under your budget! If you have the same problem as me, check it out:

-Cutting down without actually changing your spending patterns will never work.

-Keep your budget high, but try to spend less than you need to.

-For example, if your grocery budget is $500/month for your family of five, but you only end up spending $350, that’s $150 more that can go into your savings…which adds up to $1,800 extra a year!

-Any time you stay UNDER budget on a certain expense, divert the extra to your savings!

Warning Signs of a Bad Real Estate Agent

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

8456188296_c28f171779_oLet me preface this by saying: if you are buying or selling a home, you should absolutely hire a Realtor to help you. You will save money in the long run, not to mention a huge amount of stress- they will make sure the transaction goes smoothly. However, that is all dependent on your agent being good at what they do. While almost all agents are great at their job and will communicate effectively, there are some that will exhibit warning signs that you should watch out for. Check out this article by Lisa at Mama Real Estate. If this sounds like your agent, it might be time to hire a new one:

-They don’t call or respond in a timely manner- if it takes them days or weeks to get back to you, they are not taking you seriously.

-They refuse to negotiate on your behalf.

-They tell others your confidential information without your express consent.

-They are extremely disorganized- Are they always late? Losing or forgetting important documents? Do they seem scatterbrained and all over the place? This type of irresponsible person is probably not the one you want handling a transaction worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
