When I was little, my favorite board game was LIFE. I loved playing it and trying to get what I perceived as the ideal life: college track, large salary, fun job (like entertainer or artist), marriage, two kids, and the Victorian house. When you’re a kid, the goal of LIFE is to finish the game with the most money (what kind of message is that? Hahaha). So, as kids, we’d never spend money that we didn’t ~have~ to spend. Especially on home or car insurance. And most of the time, it was fine. We never got in car accidents, and never landed on the “House flood/fire” spaces.
But eventually, someone would. And almost always, that person did not buy the home insurance (I think it’s like $15,000 in game money), and would have to pay over $100k in damages. And that person never, ever won the game of LIFE. Don’t be that person. Homeowner’s insurance is one thing that everyone should have, and you’re lucky if you never need it. -Know what it covers: most policies cover damage from storm, fires, and theft + liability if someone is injured on your property
-Know what it doesn’t cover: some policies do not cover flooding or earthquake damage
-Always shop around before deciding on a policy
-Lower your rates- having a working smoke alarm and a home security system can lower your rates!
-File a claim as soon as possible when damage is done.
