Cover Letter Must Haves

by Kathy T.

Whether you’re applying for a company that lets you work from home, or one that makes you commute, you still have to get hired! Before an interviewer ever sees you, you’re going to need to make a good first impression with your resume and cover letter. However, it can be challenging to craft the perfect one- especially if you’re just starting out. For some awesome tips that will get you hired, read this post by Emily Co at Popsugar:

-Change it for every company. Generic letters are obvious

-Make a case and sell yourself

-Be different- don’t be repetitive, show your personality

-Focus on the company, not yourself

-Edit, edit, edit!

Apps For Entrepreneurs

by Kathy T.

If you’re a real estate agent, an entrepreneur, a freelancer, or other work-from-homer, you depend on your technology. Without my laptop and my smartphone, there’s no way I could get anything done. I write on my phone and my computer, post my articles, look for blogging images, upload my own photos, email- the list is endless. I use the WordPress app, Plaintext (a phone word processor), and Aviary, Flickr, and Instagram for photos. I don’t know where I would be without my phone. If you have your own business, or are a blogger, there are plenty of (free!) apps out there to help you. Check out this post by Scott Gerber at Mashable for a good list:

-Lift- to develop good habits

-Winstreak- This app helps you focus on what’s important and the steps you need to accomplish to move toward your goals.

-CloudMagic- a powerful but simple search tool

-Fleksy- lets you type without looking at your computer

Proper Laptop Posture

by Kathy T.

When working from home, it’s easy to stay in bed all day hunched over your computer. But- that’s terrible for your back- and even worse for your productivity. Watch this video for tips!

Should You Set Up An Email List For Your Blog?

by Kathy T.

Currently, I’m subscribed the email lists of more blogs than I can count. Personal finance blogs, craft (crochet) blogs, mommy blogs, pet blogs, food blogs- the list goes on and on. I love seeing new crochet patterns, recipes, and tips in my email. It also makes me feel more connected with the writers, and lets me know if they are running any contests. So, if you are considering adding an email list to your blog, you should definitely do it! Read this post by Bonnie Andrews at HobbyToHot for more info:

-It gives you direct access to your readers

-It gives you access to feedback

-It deepens your connection with your readers

-It’s the highest “return on investment” of any other channel

Want To Start A Home Business? Here Are Some Ideas

by Kathy T.

Does the idea of working from home appeal to you, but most work-from-home jobs just don’t seem to be a good fit? Sure, you can be a freelancer or a virtual assistant, but with those jobs, you still have a boss to answer to. Why not be your own boss? A great way to work from home is by starting your own small, online business. The best part is, since you don’t have a storefront, it doesn’t require a huge financial commitment. For some business ideas, read this post by Jeff Rose at Good Financial Cents. Keep in mind that most of these are legitimate careers, and will take some training- but that’s what makes them so appealing:

-Bookkeeping

-Tax preparation

-Hairstylist (My current stylist runs her salon out of her home! She keeps more of her money, and I get to see her adorable dogs when I get my hair done)

-Translating

-Medical Transcription

-Grant Writing

-Blogging

-Mystery shopping

Check out the post for full descriptions on what each career requires, as well as the training you will need and the average salary. It’s an invaluable resource!

by Kathy T.

Your phone is probably like an attachment of yourself- and it’s essential for all work-from-homers. But, you’d be surprised how much bacteria accumulates on it! Be sure to sanitize it periodically to fight off disease.
