by Kathy T.

… That you don’t have to leave your dorm to do. Some people think that the work-from-home world is solely for stay-at-home moms, or for people who live in rural areas that telecommute to a major company. However, that is simply not true! There are all kinds of work-from-home jobs out there, for people from all walks of life. Work-from-home jobs are especially great for college students. It’s a great way to earn extra cash, without taking out valuable studying time to commute. If you are in college and looking for some work opportunities, check out this post at Freebie Finding Mom for some ideas:

-Become a tutor and work through your college, or out of your own home.

-Dog sit or Babysit

-Freelancer- Are you an English major? Into graphic design? Studying a foreign language? There are all kinds of freelancing jobs out there. Freelancing is an option for many industries including finances, graphic design, IT, copywriting, translating, and administrative tasks. Depending on your industry, there are specific websites you’ll want to check out. For example,99designs.com is great for graphic designers and artists. You may also want to look into www.elance.com.

Time Manage Like A Pro

by Kathy T.

If I had to pick out my major character flaw, it would be easy: I’m a terrible procrastinator. If something can be put off until literally the last second- it will be. If it CAN’T be put off, well, sometimes it will be anyway. I have to set up rigid routines for myself (which is hard, because I have almost no discipline) in order to get anything done. Over the years, I have improved- but I’m always on the lookout for more time management help. That’s why I love this article by Ruth Soukup at Living Well Spending Less:

-List your priorities: Take ten minutes to write down the 5-10 things that are most important to you in the season of life you are in right now.
-Set specific goals: List five major things you would like to accomplish by this time next year.  Be as specific as possible.

-Get the hard, not-fun stuff out of the way first. There is a reason why math class is always first period in school.

-Reset your habits

Blog Organization Tips

by Kathy T.

Having a blog that is easy to navigate is essential if you want to pull in new readers, and keep the old ones coming back. If they can’t find the recipe, tutorial, or article that they’re looking for, they’re more than likely to just find it somewhere else. Using tags, search bars, and categories are great ways to organize your blog, but they can be quite a headache. Read this post at Tico and Tina for tips on how to straighten up your blog while keeping your sanity:

-Categories are for big picture, tags are for smaller details

-Make your “about” page easy to find

-Keep your design simple- tons of bells and whistles can be distracting to readers

The post also includes links to useful WordPress plugins- be sure to check it out!

Extra Money When Working From Home

by Kathy T.

Whether you are already working from home, are a stay-at-home parent, or just have some free time where you’re looking to make some extra cash, there are plenty of ways to turn your time into money without getting out of your pajamas. If you’re already working from home, you can simply add these options to your current routine. If you’re looking to start, some of these are great ideas for first jobs. It can be hard to find legitimate work from home jobs, so this post from Suzanne Kearns at Money Crashers is awesome because it tells you how to avoid scams as well. Without further ado, here are a few ways to make extra money at home:

-Freelance writing

-Sell your knowledge by teaching online classes

-Start a bed and breakfast in your home

-Sell produce at a farmer’s market

-Sell your crafts online or at a fair

-Sell your time and voice at a call center

-Work as a consultant and sell your knowledge and experience

How To Beat Blogger’s Block

by Kathy T.

If you’re a creative person, you know what I mean by “burnout”. You have no inspiration. Whatever your craft, you suddenly can’t do it. You can’t draw, or paint, or write, or think of any new ideas at all. If your income is mostly or completely dependent on your craft, this can be disastrous. However, if you’re writing a post of original content every day, it will definitely happen. For tips on how to get over “blogger’s burnout,” read this post by Rebecca at Letters from Sunnybrook:

The fun of writing gives way to the pressures of deadlines and earning potential, social media issues, and hosting commitments.

Scale back — You decided to do X posts per week. You can choose to slow down the pace and catch your breath.

Don’t post stuff you aren’t proud of

Regroup — go back to why you wanted to write, what you wanted to write about, why this is important for you to do this.

Becoming A Top Producer In Anything

by Kathy T.

On this site, I usually write about real estate and blogging. But, the truth is, anyone working from home can use the tips I share most of the time. These tips by Teri Conrad at Inman News were written for real estate agents, but I believe anyone can use them. If you’re just now starting out into a new field, going from entry level to being a top producer can be a struggle. This article will help:

-Find a good mentor- shadow them if you can, ask questions

-Have a business plan and execute it

–Technology is great, but don’t plan to ever solely rely on it for generating business

–Prepare to be extremely responsive whether it’s in response to a lead or an inquiry from one of your current clients

–Bonus: Do not burn through your first paycheck (or any, for that matter).Make sure you set aside money for taxes (30 percent?), retirement (10 percent), and for your business
