Easiest Houseplants To Grow

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

3932055544_efb541926d_zIf I had to pick, I’d say I have a “gray thumb”. Definitely not green, but not totally black. The plants I get usually last a little while and put up a good fight, but eventually die. The only three house plants that I’ve had for years and have consistently kept alive are: succulents, my aloe plant, and a Venus Flytrap (since he basically feeds himself). If you are ~almost~ hopeless at gardening like I am, but still love plants, check out this post by Balcony Garden Web. Here are some house plants that you can grow with minimal care, that are almost impossible to kill (the biggest mistake you can make with most of them is OVER watering):

Jade Plant (Crassula ovata)

Spider plant (Chlorophytum)

Fiddle leaf fig

Philodendron

Inch Plant (Tradescantia zebrina)

Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)

English Ivy

Easy Veggies To Plant From Seeds

by Kathy T.

7553779764_820730c62b_zFor lots of veggies and plants, you have to either get them as seedlings, or start them indoors. However, there are some that you can plant directly in the ground as seeds. This is called “direct sowing,” and saves you a lot of time and effort. For a list of plants that you can direct sow, check out this post by Rachel Arsenault at Grow A Good Life. First, prepare the soil with fertilizer, then plant any of these seeds:

Beans

Beets

Carrots

Corn

Cucumbers

Lettuce

Peas

Radishes

Squash

Spinach

Best Smelling Plants For Your Yard

by Kathy T.

In my spare time, I have a few hobbies that I like to do. One is soap making! I love mixing together the oils and fragrances and additives (like flower petals, seeds, etc.) and creating something that I can use. Plus, it makes my house smell absolutely heavenly. My favorite scents are jasmine, gardenia, rose, and raspberry. But, you don’t have to be a soap maker to have a fabulous smelling home or yard. Some plants naturally freshen your air and add their nice fragrances to your home. Check out this post by Joy at Bless My Weeds for the best smelling plants you can get:

-Scented geraniums

-Jasmine

-Gardenia (I told you!)

-Sweet Bay

-Lavender

-Rosemary

-Lilac

Awesome Morning Glory Trick

by Kathy T.

I love morning glories. When I was a kid, I thought they were magic, and I’d get up early to go see them open up. Kids will be astounded by them! They also smell beautiful and make a wonderful addition to any garden. If you are considering planting morning glories at your home, check out this idea at Much Pics. You plant them in a hanging basket until they are overflowing, then they will grow downward and create a stunning pillar of flowers and foliage. It looks amazing on any porch or deck. Try it out!

How To Re-Plant Succulents

by Kathy T.

It takes a lot to kill a succulent. That’s why they’re perfect gardening projects for first timers or even kids. However, they do still require some measure of care. When transplanting them, there are certain things you need to keep in mind to avoid damaging them. Check out these tips by Lindsey at Hello Hydrangea before re-potting your succulents:

-Buy green succulents if they are going to live indoors. The other colors need more heat and light.

-Replant the buds- The rose shaped succulents often come with tiny buds growing at their base. These sweet little babies are easy to pull off and will survive if you stick their orange stems into some dirt. Guess what? Free succulents!

-Break up the roots and spread them out before moving them to another pot

-Mix dirt and sand together

Best House Plants

by Kathy T.

And when I say “best,” I mean “hardest to kill”. It’s been proven that growing plants indoors does wonders for your creativity and mental health, not to mention the fact that they provide your home with fresh air. Want all the benefits without the hassle of dealing with high maintenance plants? Check out this post by Lauren Conrad for the easiest plants to grow indoors:

-Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree- grows quickly and becomes a tall tree, but is poisonous to pets!

-Succulents- thrive in sunlight, and need little to no water

-Snake plants- keep the soil dry most of the time.

-Cacti- love sunlight, and don’t need to be watered often.

-Aloe vera- needs lots of sun, but not lots of water.
