7 Tips For Starting A Fairy Garden

by Kathy T.

Yesterday, a few friends and I got together to make our own fairy gardens. I’ve been seeing them for a while on Pinterest now and had always wanted to try them! If you haven’t seen them before, they are basically miniature container gardens that include tiny pieces of furniture and other trinkets. Basically, creating a space in your yard for “fairies” to come visit 😉 It’s fairly easy and inexpensive to start- all you need is a container, some soil, a few small plants, and some trinkets (broken jewelry, small toys, etc. that you can find laying around your house). Plus, kids will also love creating them! If you want to make your own, here are some tips that I learned yesterday:

-Keep a theme in mind: The most important thing to remember is theme. Select a theme and don’t deviate! Your garden should tell a story. Are you creating a hobbit hole? A mermaid oasis? A woodland cottage?A flower garden? Pick what inspires you.

-Remember scale: Don’t use huge, towering plants if your fairy home is only 4 inches tall.

-Plan ahead: get plants that have similar needs. If your garden is going to be indoors, choose plants that thrive in the shade. If you have a gray thumb like me, here’s a tip: succulents are almost un-killable.

-Get creative! Look for every day objects that can be repurposed. A painted thumbtack could easily become a mini toadstool. You can create fairy homes out of old milk cartons, bark, and pinecones. My friend created a little fairy-sized hammock out of a scrap of tulle and two twigs. Keep your mind open!

-Moss, moss, moss. Put moss everywhere that there aren’t decorations or other plants. It will keep your garden from looking patchy and sparse.

-When choosing a container, look for surface space rather than depth. This will give you more room to create your scene.

-Remember that you won’t finish in one day. You will most likely always be expanding your garden, and finding new things to add.

Special thanks to Katie Clark for helping me make mine and teaching me these tips!

Creating A Beautiful Window Box

by Kathy T.

I absolutely adore window boxes, and wish they would come back in style. I think they give homes a fairytale, cottage-like feel, and I would put one under every one of my windows if my family would let me. Plus, they’re like mini container gardens, so they’re nice and compact and easy to maintain. If you are thinking of installing flower boxes of your own, check out this post by Kelly at the Lily Pad Cottage blog for some great tips on keeping them gorgeous:

– Plant different flowers all mixed in but still keeping in mind balance and symmetry.

-Use fertilizer

-Water them every day that it doesn’t rain!

Summer Craft Ideas: Painted Pots

by Kathy T.

There is nothing wrong with terracotta pots, if that’s your style. But I am absolutely in love with all these ideas from Paige at Paige’s Party Ideas! All you need for most of these projects is a pot, paint, and a little bit of creativity. It could be the perfect craft idea to get you out of the Winter mood and ready for Spring (since apparently the weather keeps changing its mind). Check out her post here for pictures and inspiration. I especially like the metallic one!

-Two tone

-Triangles

-Stencil

-Chalkboard

-Assortment of small pots in a particular color scheme

-Metallic

-Chevron

Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers

by Kathy T.

…What does that mean? Is it some hip new zombie video game? A type of dance move? Some kind of… I don’t know, amusement park ride? All wrong! Apparently, using the “thrillers, fillers, and spillers” rule is a way to arrange plants in a container for maximum aesthetic appeal. Read: how to make your potted plants look pretty. I’m a huge fan of potted plants! I love bringing the outside indoors. Just having nature around me makes me feel more creative and inspired. Apparently, putting multiple types of plants in the same pot is a great way to make them even more eye-catching. Just add a few of each type of plant to your container (a thriller, and a few spillers and fillers). Still clueless? Check out this post at Dwell On Joy:

THRILLERS – plants with height

SPILLERS – plants that spill over the side of the container

FILLERS – plants that fill up the empty spaces between the thrillers & spillers

– Be sure you match the plants in your pot by the amount of sunlight they will need. For example, full sun thrillers belong with full sun spillers.

– Be sure to use both foliage and flowers. Try contrasting colors and textures to get the most dramatic look!

Indoor Gardening Idea: Terrariums

by Kathy T.

If you have a tiny lawn, or no lawn at all (hello, apartment living!), then this post is for you. I went from living in a home with a huge yard (I think we had 2 acres, if I’m remembering right) to a two bedroom, barely-700-sq ft apartment. One thing I missed almost immediately was the greenery. And of course, in an apartment, you can’t do anything to the land. There are ways to grow plants indoors, but I also had cats that liked to get into everything– so that wasn’t really an option. But- there is an alternative! Check out this slideshow at Refinery 29! It shows, in detail, how to build your own self-contained terrarium, complete with beautiful photos. Be sure to give it a look!

Herb Garden Inspiration Gold Mine

by Kathy T.

I love, love, love growing my own fresh herbs. They’re the only plants that I don’t accidentally kill– plus, they’re practical! I love how they taste, and I love how they look. But the thing I love most of all about herbs? There are plenty of ways to get creative with planting them. If you need inspiration for planting your own herb garden, look no further than this compilation at By Stephanie Lynn-– it is the absolute mother lode of herb garden ideas. Some of these look like more art than dirt and plants. Here are some of my favorites:

-Old wheel barrow garden

-Repurposed ladder and tin cans

-Recycled book planter

-Spiral built rock bed

-Cinderblock garden wall
