Networking Isn’t Always About the Sale

One of the things that can be difficult to grasp as you head out to market your home business is that networking isn’t always about the sale. Whether you are using social networking online, or whether you are doing a meet and greet at the local Chamber of Commerce or whether you are attending a conference, networking may not always mean that you get a sale immediately.

Over at Sparkplugging, Susan Payton points out that always trying to pitch your new contacts put you on the fast-track to rejection. This is because you go to a conference or some other networking event (even online) to meet people. You don’t go to sell your stuff. Networking is about building connections; it’s not really about the sale.

Effective networking means that you meet people, make connections and let them know you are out there. Exchange business cards. Make small talk. Tell them what you do. But lay off on the sales pitches unless someone actually asks for one. In the end, if you establish a relationship with someone, the networking experience was a success. You may not get a sale until far down the road, or not at all, but at least the people you meet are aware of who you are, and what you do.

Friday Fun Video: Remembering 9/11

by Miranda Marquit Leave a Comment

We have a tendency to mark significant events, and 9/11 definitely qualifies. So, instead of a “fun” video, I thought I’d put up this 9/11 tribute video. It’s short, and it’s somewhat thought provoking. Take a few minutes to remember the fallen. And try to recapture a feeling of unity.

Happy Labor Day!

by Miranda Marquit Leave a Comment

Today is Labor Day in the U.S. Many folks have the day off, and are enjoying a holiday. I have a little bit of work to do, but not much. I’m looking forward to a mostly relaxing day with my family. I hope you are, too.

Happy Labor Day!

Working from Home and “FU Money”

by Miranda Marquit 1 Comment

While I was completing my M.A. in journalism, I had a professor who was talking to us about ethics. He said that it was important to have “FU money” saved up so that if we were asked to do something we felt was wrong, we could say no. The thinking was this: While you won’t always be fired for something you refuse to do, the chance is there, and you need to be prepared to walk. You can’t walk if you don’t have anything saved up.

This can apply when you are working from home. It can apply when you are negotiating a freelance project or when you refuse to do something you find questionable. The idea is that you should work up to a position where you don’t “need” any one client or project. You should save up some money (in something like an emergency fund) so that you can get by. You should also have some diversity in your projects, clients and income streams so that the loss of one does not result in a devastating situation.

In the end, it’s about the freedom to turn down projects or orders that don’t pay what you’re worth, cause you an ethical dilemma, or that you just don’t have time for. Build up your resources over time so that you have the ability to do what you want to do, rather than always being at someone else’s mercy.

Friday Fun Video: Star Spangled Banner

by Miranda Marquit Leave a Comment

A perennial debate goes on about whether to keep the Star Spangled Banner as our national anthem. Some think that “America the Beautiful” or “God Bless America” would be preferable. I have a sort of nostalgic liking for the Star Spangled Banner. In any case, in honor of the 4th of July this weekend, here are two renditions. I chose the second because it highlights the words. Now is a good time learn them.

Happy 4th of July!

Happy Canada Day!

by Miranda Marquit 1 Comment

(L to R...

It’s a good week for sovereignty from British colonial rule. Today is Canada Day, a commemoration of the day that Britain granted Canada dominion over its own affairs (and why it was once called Dominion Day). The name was changed to Canada Day in 1982, when the Constitution Act patriated the Canadian constitution, effectively removing the last bit of British political control over Canada.

No, I am not Canadian. But I have a lot of Canadian friends, and I “know” a lot of Canadians through my online work. So I wanted to wish my Canadian buddies a happy Canada Day. Hopefully, later this week, they will return the favor and wish me a happy 4th of July!

Free Domain Name for a Year — And a Business Profile Page

by Miranda Marquit Leave a Comment

Our computers

According to Outright.com, close to 60% of small business owners do not have a Web site. This includes many people with a home business. Does your home business have a Web site? If not, you should consider getting one. A Web site can be a big help to a home business, allowing people to easily find you online. One way you can get one – or at least get a free domain name for a year – is by signing up with Outright.com.

Outright.com is a free online business bookkeeping service. Outright is partnering with Network Solutions for a limited time to offer free domain names. Network Solutions is offering a free domain name with hosting packages, but if you don’t want to pay for a hosting package, signing up with Outright can be a good way to get a free domain name without the hosting (and get free bookkeeping software).

The promotion lasts from June 9th (yesterday) until July 31.

Barack Obama Announces Plans to Create More Jobs

by Miranda Marquit Leave a Comment

One of the biggest concerns that many Americans have with regard to the economy is the fact that jobs continue to be lost. Even though the pace of the decline in payrolls has slowed considerably, jobs are still being lost from the economy. As a result, it is little surprise that jobs represent the #1 concern facing many Americans.

In order to address these concerns, President Barack Obama announced new programs designed to stimulate the job market with 600,000 jobs. This is good news for many, including those with a home business. If the economy picks up, thanks to more jobs and an increased ability to spend, many small businesses will see the positive effects.

Jobs have been thought of as one of the keys to reviving the economy, and if the President’s plans work, we should see true economic improvement soon.

Should You Start a Home Business During a Recession?

by Miranda Marquit 2 Comments

Right now, in this time of economic uncertainty, many are wondering what they can do if they lose a job. One of the things that can be done to help replace some of the income from a lost job is to start a home business. You can start a business during a recession, and join one of the many businesses that are successful — even though they started during a recession. Over at My Two Dollars, there is an excellent discussion of the pros and cons of starting a business during a recession.

I think one of the best reasons given in the post is that there are many new opportunities available right now. The Internet has provided a host of opportunities that have not been seen before, as well as dramatically reducing the costs associated with starting and running a business. There are some drawbacks, such as the difficulty in finding consumers willing to spend money during a recession, but if you choose your business carefully, and offer a product or service that is needed, you may be able to find success.
