Amazing Tips To Increase Your Productivity

by Kathy T.

Workers of all professions occasionally get the blahs. Maybe you just started the day on the wrong side of the bed, you feel uninspired or just unfocused. It happens. But with creative professionals, these days are extra bad, happen more often if you don’t know how to combat it, and can have a more serious negative impact on your work. That’s why it’s important for anyone who works from home, works in an artistic field, or has some other non-traditional job to keep a strict daily routine. If you find yourself in a bit of a productivity slump, check out these tips from Meredith Lepore at Levo for things you can do to give yourself a little boost:

-Make lists, but get creative: vary the format, start in the center of the page and branch outward, create thought bubbles and venn diagrams to stimulate your brain and help you think outside the box.

-Smell flowers when you wake up- seeing bright colors in the morning lifts your energy.

-Take a walk in the park- strolling through a nature setting shows a 20% improvement in attention and focus tests.

Blog Photos 101

by Kathy T.

Personally, I’m a terrible photographer. Every photo I take is blurry, or off centered, or too dim. That’s why I mostly use creative commons photos. However, if you run a blog where having your own photos are integral (a cooking, craft, mommy, or gardening blog, for example), making sure these photos are professional and alluring is crucial. This is doubly true if you are selling a product with your blog. For tips on taking better photos for your blog, check out this post by Kelly at A Swell Place To Dwell:

-Give yourself time- Photography is a skill that you have to practice, it’s not going to happen over night (well, that’s encouraging!)

-Invest in a camera- Once I started learning my new DSLR I totally fell in love with photography

-Learn Manual Mode-   Manual mode lets you produce what YOU want to produce, not what the camera THINKS you want to produce. Practicing will not cost you a penny.

-Always turn off your flash, look for beautiful natural light in your home.

Why People Aren’t Reading Your Blog

by Kathy T.

Bloggers read other blogs- it’s how we get inspiration and connect with similar readers, plus it’s fun! I love seeing other people’s content when I’m not writing my own. However, there are definitely blog turn-offs out there that will make me immediately stop reading and move on. Want to make your readers stay? Read this post by Elena at Living With Batman! She lists her frustrations with certain blog posts, and I 100% agree with her on the first one!

-Email subscriptions/ pop ups at entry- Holy Crap! I just hit your blog for the first time and you want me to subscribe? Give me a break.

-Not mobile friendly- most readers are reading on smartphones.

-Too long and visually boring- avoid large walls of text!

-Too busy- you don’t have to include photos, videos, WordPress plugins, different colors of fonts, and quotes all in the same post!

Sites That Will Help Anyone’s Productivity

by Kathy T.

The hardest part about writing for a living is staying focused and managing time wisely. With a traditional job, you’re at a desk from 9-5, and you work during that time. It’s much easier to focus than when you’re at home, with the TV on, Facebook in the background, with kids running around you. And that doesn’t even take into account the writer’s block that can happen daily. That’s why I love this post by Julia Hughes at S Trends! Here are her top websites that will keep you focused, productive, and on track- no matter what it is that you are trying to do:

-LinkedIn- is a fantastic networking tool for freelancers and young professionals.

-Resume Genius- provides an easy, stream-lined online form

-Google Drive- for your online storage needs

-Tomato Timer- keeps you from taking breaks that last too long

-My Daily Schedule- This schedule gives you the option of logging what you’ve done that day or seeing how your time adds up over the course of a week.

How To Stop Procrastinating and Get Your Writing Done!

by Kathy T.

This article by Monica M. Clark at The Write Practice was written for people who are working on novels, short stories, and other creative writers. However, the tips can apply to anyone who writes for a living (or for fun). That’s you, bloggers! Even if you love writing, sometimes it can be so hard to just stop procrastinating and start typing. And for some reason, having a deadline can be counterproductive and actually make the procrastination worse! In the immortal words of Shia Lebouf, JUST DO IT! Or, check out Clark’s tips for getting started and staying productive:

-Don’t pull all nighters, and never PLAN to pull one! This will mess you up even more!

-Pay limited attention to progress of peers with same goals. Stop comparing your blog to your friend’s.

-Log out of Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter- etc. Block them if you have to (I turn off my wifi while writing).

-Eating, watching TV, etc., are all distractions. Don’t take a break until you meet a certain goal.

by Kathy T.

So, you’ve finally done it. You’ve started your own blog, and are pouring you passion into words online. You’ve even started to get somewhat of a following- subscribers, repins, and Facebook shares. Congrats! Now it’s time to kick it up a notch and get paid for what you’re doing. A common question of many beginning bloggers is: how? Well, there are different avenues you can take when monetizing your blog. To find out what’s best for you, read this post by Mike Allton at the Site Sell blog for ideas:

-Sell adspace, make money by putting up ads.

-Get sponsors, write sponsored posts

-Make affiliate recommendations

-Sell your own products and services (perfect for Realtors or artists).

-Mixing too many monetization methods will confuse and distract your audience.

-You can try a few and see which methods, not just work better in terms of revenue, but which ones suit you.

What To Do Before You Post

by Kathy T.

Whether you run a blog for profit, personal reasons, or both, you want to post quality content. After all, what you write reflects on you! If you are writing about your recent vacation, a recipe, or are writing a sponsored product post, it’s important to dot your i’s and cross your t’s before you hit that “Publish” button. For what to check each time before you post, read this article by Madison at Wetherills Say I Do:

-Proofread- check for spelling, grammar, and sentence flow. Also, preview your post and make sure that your formatting looks good!

-Categorize and add tags

-Create a branded Pinterest image- yes, for each post. Vertical, with text.

-Schedule social media promotions

-Link older posts, be sure any other links work.

Where To Write

by Kathy T.

I am the worst procrastinator in the world (or best, I suppose). If there is a distraction around when I try to write, you can bet I’ll be distracted..probably for a few hours, until it becomes time to freak out because my work isn’t done. I used to write in my bed, but of course there is my phone, a book, and the TV, not to mention the internet…or, you know, pillows and naps. Then, I wrote at the desk space in my room. Less distraction, but I still had access to procrastination enablers like my phone- plus I could still watch TV. Finally, I decided that the only way to actually get anything done at home was to get out of my room (and leave my phone there!). Now, I either write at the kitchen table, or outside on my porch. I have to have a completely distraction-free space. It also helps if I’m out in the fresh air (and if I put a temporary site blocker on my browser for Facebook and Pinterest). For tips on creating your perfect writing space, check out this post by Christy at Avoiding Atrophy:

-Pick an area that you actually want to be in your home.

-If you can, write by a window. Watching people, plants, and animals do their thing can be inspiring.

-Remove all unnecessary distractions and keep the area clean.

-Keep only things that inspire you to write- favorite pens, notebooks, stationary. Be picky and claim ownership!

As a writer and a blogger, apps are absolute godsends. I can write anywhere, save it, and have it uploaded either to my Dropbox or blog instantly. Some apps are great for writing prompts, some for productivity, some for organization, and others for plain old word processing. For the best ipad apps that make life easier for bloggers, check out this post by Nicole Etolen at Pretty Opionated:

BlogPad Pro- for those who publish their blogs on WordPress

WordSwag- photo editing app that creates pinnable images with text on them
