Preparing For A Winter Baby

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

3711466241_5a7299b97d_zLately, it seems like everyone I know is having babies! Last month, at least 4 of my friends and family members had a child. However, I do still know many who are expecting and due this Winter! Having a baby (and being pregnant in) summer can be challenging, but winter presents its own set of things that need to be considered. If you or a loved one are due this winter, now is the time to prepare. Check out these tips by Simone Mcnamara at Mums Grape Vine:

-Dress your baby in layers to protect them from the cold

-Think ahead- make sure you have larger sized, season appropriate clothes for your baby to grow into.

-Create a cozy bedtime- make sure to have a thermometer in the nursery to ensure your baby isn’t too cold or hot.

-Regularly wash your hands to make sure you don’t transmit any winter colds to your baby.

One Year Old Activities Guide

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

3766402122_186fc050ed_zBy the time your infant is a year old, they’re probably already mobile. Crawling, and possibly walking on their own. They can’t seem to sit through all those crafts that you’ve been hoarding on Pinterest yet, won’t sit long enough to read a book together, and get bored with toys after about a minute. That’s normal. They’re slowly discovering their entire world, and are going to be curious! So, what activities CAN a one year old do? Check out this awesome list by Katie at View From A Step Stool for crafts and games that will show your one year old just a little bit more of their amazing world:

-Playdough

-Sensory Bins and Bottles

-Water play

-Bath time paint

-Building blocks

-Sidewalk chalk

Professional Level Photos On Your Phone

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

11647814895_3b4eccf5eb_zThere are times in life where it is absolutely worth it to shell out the cash for a professional photographer: your high school senior photos, your wedding, the births of your children, and family group photos are some pretty basic occasions that deserve commemorating. My (professionally shot) photos of myself and my friends from high school, and those of my niece and nephew are some of my most treasured possessions. However, isn’t every day of your child’s life worth capturing and documenting? Don’t you wish you had your very own personal photographer for every single milestone they reach? Their first tooth, all their birthdays, kindergarten graduation, holidays- the list goes on. But, unless you’re filthy rich, you probably can’t afford to pull out all the stops that often.

In those cases, you’ll have to be your child’s own professional photographer! Now, I’m a pretty bad photographer. One out of every 50 photos I take might be decent. That’s why I love this post at the Pampers.com blog. Here are their top tips for taking professional quality baby photos with your own phone:

-Use natural light, lots of it- take your photos outsides or next to a window

-Consider the background and what’s in the frame

-Get close up- there is nothing more beautiful than a sleeping newborn

-Don’t try to pose them, capture them in their natural element and don’t try to force a smile.

-Take as many shots as possible. One out of 50 will be the perfect picture (See! I told you so! Maybe that means I’m not a terrible photographer, just an average one.)

Taking Care of a Newborn… While Raising A Toddler

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

5205104107_cb4d130165_zAbout a month ago, my sister gave birth to her daughter. Her other child is two years old. So, things can be pretty chaotic at her place. I go over there every few days, and it always seems like she’s walking on a tightrope, trying to balance the newborn’s needs and the toddler’s. It can get a little crazy, but it’s not impossible. If you are pregnant with your second child, while still raising a toddler, it can be intimidating. However, there are lots of benefits of having children close together in age! They’ll go to school together, probably be closer friends, and have similar interests at the same time. For tips on juggling your newborn and your toddler, read this article by Jen at Breastfeeding Needs:

-Help your toddler become more independent before the baby’s birth. Try to help her go to bed on her own, use the stairs, begin potty training, etc.

-Consider having your toddler stay with a relative during the first week or two after the birth

-Try to sync up their nap/sleep schedules. Sometimes, someone will be screaming, and that’s okay! The easiest way to do this is by putting the baby in a rocker/swing, while taking care of your toddler yourself.

-Try baby-wearing. It makes keeping up with your toddler easier!

Baby Proofing Your Home

by Kathy T.

I just moved into a new place, and my nephew came to visit for the first time a week or so ago. He’s two years old, so he naturally wants to get into everything. Now, my new apartment is fairly spacious, and I keep it very clean. I made sure all medication was up and out of his reach, and that the bathroom door was shut to keep him from getting into toilet water or kitty litter. But, he still found ways to (almost) destroy things and hurt himself (window blinds, my boyfriend’s computer, the coffee table)- almost anything can become a hazard. So, if you are expecting a baby soon, or if your infant has recently become mobile, it’s imperative that you babyproof your home. For tips on what to do, read this article by JD at Semi Delicate Balance:

-Put up baby gates to block off rooms or stairs

-Cover all exposed outlets

-Lock up cabinets that contain cleaning products or sharp objects

-Pad sharp corners of furniture

-Fasten heavy furniture to the wall

Even if you follow every single rule to the T, I promise that your baby will find some other way to hurt herself and/or destroy expensive items- make sure young children are constantly supervised!!!

Before You Give Birth….

by Kathy T.

My sister is pregnant with her second child, and is due next week! However, her doctor doesn’t think she’s going to make it that far- that baby is ready to come out! So, it’s more important than ever to be prepared for when the baby does decide that it’s time. For a list of things that everyone should do before their baby is born, read this article by Alisha at The Savvy Bump:

-Get some freezer meals ready, so no one has to cook anything for a few weeks

-Deep clean your entire home, especially the baby’s room

-Stock up on essentials- formula, diapers, baby clothes, and wipes

-Give yourself some pampering- get a pedicure, or a massage

-Have your postpartum wardrobe planned out

Friday Fun Video: Dancing Babies Everywhere!

by Kathy T.

This is so cute! My best friend has 8-month old twins, and they are already dancing and wobbling whenever they hear music they like. I think it’s cool how everyone has the instinct to move to music from such an early age 🙂

DIY Baby Mobiles

by Kathy T.

Mobiles are an awesome way to get the nursery decorated, and also serve the purpose of entertaining and calming your baby. They stimulate the infant’s mind, and it gives them something to look at besides the ceiling as they fall asleep. You don’t have to go out and buy a fancy mobile; in fact, I’ve seen tons of beautiful homemade ones on Etsy and Pinterest. Check out this post by Nicole at The Kavanaugh Report for some DIY, Montessori inspired baby mobiles:

Munari Mobile – uses styrofoam balls and black and white designs

Octahedron Mobile –  consists of three octahedrons made from metallic paper (typically Red, gold, and blue) and hung at different levels

Dancer Mobile-looks like people dancing in the wind; use shimmery, sparkly paper and string!

Baby Name Ideas- Offbeat And Pretty

by Kathy T.

I’ve written before about how I’m a total baby name addict- and how much I judge others by their baby name selections. If a name is too common, it means the parents are unoriginal. However, if it’s TOO ~kreeaytyv~, it means the parents are honestly a bit dumb. I try to look for names that are both classic and underused. For me, the perfect name is one that everyone recognizes as a real name and can pronounce, but that not very many people actually have. That’s why I love this list by Nadia Carriere (Nadia is a perfect example of a good name- it’s definitely a name, but you’ve probably only met one or two Nadias in your life, if any at all) at Disney Baby of 50 names that are unusual, yet pretty. Here are some of my favorites:

Vera

Anya

Wren

Gale

Robin

Declan

Catalina

Soleil

by Kathy T.

3580638847_8f53f93590_zRemember when you were in school, and sometimes a teachers would be merciful and let you use an index card “cheat sheet” on a test? Why don’t they have those for real life? For doing your taxes, or auto maintenance, or raising kids? Well, good news- at least for the last one. This post by Jennifer Fishkind at Princess Pinky Girl has rounded up the best “parenting cheat sheets” on the internet. Check it out, and you will have a handy guide for:

-Diaper contents and baby health

-Baby sign language

-Baby Physical Development
