Making Potty Training Painless

by Kathy T.

4626893485_38f90d57e9_zWe are slowly working on getting my two-year-old nephew potty trained. It’s actually going pretty well! He seems to like using the toilet like a big boy, and almost always tells us when he needs to go. Hopefully, we can transition to pull up diapers soon and let him start going by himself. However, not all kids are so easy! If you are struggling with potty training, check out this guide by Vicky at Mess for Less. She’s compiled the best tips on potty training from parents around the internet:

Pacify Without A Pacifier

by Kathy T.

3666880114_9843a99607_oOne of the most stressful parts of having a baby is when they cry…and you have no idea what to do. If they just ate, have a clean diaper, and they aren’t tired, but are still screaming, it can be super frustrating and makes you feel powerless. One way to calm them down is by sticking a pacifier in their mouths. However, if that doesn’t work, there is something else wrong. Check out this post by Aimee at A Moms Take for tips on calming a crying baby:

-Check their temperature- make sure they are not too hot or cold

-Try standing up with them and rocking them

-Check the noise level and take them somewhere quiet to calm down. They might just be overwhelmed!

-Make sure they are comfortable- burp them, check for diaper rash, and make sure clothes aren’t too tight.

Put An End To Thumb Sucking

by Kathy T.

3112391266_7fb95de550_zMy sister is driving me insane. She is trying to wean her son off a pacifier, by showing him how to suck his thumb instead. I know he’s not my kid, but it seems to me that she is just replacing one bad habit with another… which she will then have to wean him from (again). Some kids start sucking their thumbs on their own, and it can be a tough one to break. If your kid is a chronic thumb sucker, check out these tips for stopping it by Alison at Pint Sized Treasures. I feel like we’ll be needing it later:

-Recognize that it is a habit, not a bad behavior. Therefore, it should not be punished.

-Think of a reward system that your child will respond to. Set a goal. If she goes for two nights without thumb sucking, then she can go out for icecream! (or something similar).

-Remind your child of other comforts during tempting times (a favorite blanket, teddybear, etc.)

How To Save Big On Diapers

by Kathy T.

879097718_eb485b419d_zHaving a baby is ridiculously expensive, ya’ll. A normal case of diapers is like $15. And one tiny little can of formula will cost you about the same. And you go through those every week or so. Government programs like WIC and Snap can help if you’re really struggling, but if you don’t qualify, then it can be hard paying for all of it. That’s why I’m always looking for ways to save! Check out this post by Heather Schisler at Passion for Savings for how to save the most when buying diapers:

-Start stockpiling them as soon as you find out that you’re pregnant

-Compare diapers based on unit price

-Look for coupons and buy online

-Sign up for rewards EVERYWHERE, like Target, Kroger, Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid

-Hoard coupons like a madman and stack them when you can

Why Every New Mom Should Add A Playpen To Their Baby Registry

by Kathy T.

3274035415_24e166f623_oBeing a parent is hard work: especially when your baby learns how to use his legs and becomes a toddler. Chasing them all over the home, keeping them out of dangerous areas, and the constant vigilance you have to keep over them is extremely exhausting. A huge part of keeping your sanity at that stage is by setting up an area where kids can safely play. That’s why play pens are such godsends! That, and they have so many other uses. Check out this post by Rachel at A Mother Far From Home for why you need a play pen on your baby registry:

-Napping in other areas of the house when room sharing with sibling

-Safe independent playtime

-Corraling kids when you need to get other stuff done

-Family homes: bring the play yard to grandma’s so the kids have somewhere to sleep if they are sleeping over

Foods For Teething Babies

by Kathy T.

When my nephew was younger (and had no teeth), he was a challenge to feed. He would SOMETIMES eat mushy baby food, but not often. He was much more interested in whatever I had (which was usually something that he couldn’t eat). If you have an infant who still has no teeth or is teething, and would like to start giving them safe solid foods, this list by Kate Williams at Crafts on Sea is a lifesaver:

-Fruits like bananas, strawberries, halved grapes, and blueberries

-Fish like cod and haddock

-Pasta, bread, rice

-Cheese, broccoli, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs

Nature Baby Name Ideas

by Kathy T.

I’m obsessed with baby names. I love looking at name books, reading lists online, and discussing future baby name ideas with friends. My favorite kinds of names are ones that are unique, yet still recognizable as names. I’m also a hippie at heart- I love nature and love names that incorporate the great outdoors. Here’s a list of cute nature based names that I like.

Rose

Iris

Flora

Ivy

Juniper

River

Clay

Forest

Sage

Aspen

Mica

Sky/Skylar

Ocean

Rain

Personally, I think lots of these would work better as middle names, since they’re a little out of the box!
