Four Ways To Help Your Local Shelter

by Kathy T.

Most animal shelters are always desperately looking for help: volunteers, donations, and good homes for their animals. If you are wanting to make a difference in an animal’s life, consider doing any of these for your local shelter to help out:

-Donate needed items like food, cleaning products, bedding, towels, toys, etc.

-Donate money- every little bit helps, even if you only have a few dollars to feed. That $5 bill may have fed a hungry cat for a week.

-Donate your time- volunteer to feed animals, play with them, or walk them. You can also donate your skills to a shelter! Are you a web designer? Offer to make them a web page, or run their social media account! Use what you are good at and you can make a real difference in an animal’s life.

-Adopt or foster a pet!

Is Your Dog Psychic?

by Kathy T.

Anyone that has ever had a dog can tell you that they have extraordinary senses. And I’m not just talking about their superior senses of smell and hearing! Sometimes, dogs just know things. If you’re sick or sad, dogs can tell and will try to comfort you. But, dogs can tell even more things before they happen. It’s amazing! If your dog starts acting oddly, they may know something that you don’t. Check out this post by I Heart Dogs for more examples:

-Earthquakes- dogs may be able to hear rocks crumbling below the ground’s surface, and their paws may be able to sense seismic activity.

-Storms- they create an electromagnetic force that dogs can sense before the storm arrives.

-Illnesses, including cancer- sick humans give off an odor that dogs can smell.

-They can be trained to sense seizures in humans, or when a pregnant woman is about to go into labor.

Stop Clawing Cats Today

by Kathy T.

Declawing a cat is extremely painful and traumatizing to them, and many vets will not even perform the procedure since it is so inhumane. But sometimes it can seem like the only option, especially if your cat is constantly clawing holes in your furniture, carpet, and walls. However, I strongly advise to try everything else possible before resorting to declawing. Check out these tips by Pippa Elliot at Wikihow to stop your cat from scratching today:

-Purchase at least one scratching post for your cat and place it strategically

-Use your tone of voice to scold your cat when he gets near furniture

-Use a spray bottle of water to stop your cat’s behavior

-Cover problem furniture

-Keep your cat’s claws neatly trimmed

I’m not sure why they needed a study to confirm this- they could have just asked any dog owner.

Cat Dental Health

by Kathy T.

Cat breath is not a good smell, but if it starts smelling worse than normal, it’s possible that your cat is having dental problems. It may be time to take him/her to the vet! I honestly never knew there was a way to clean your cat’s teeth until I read this article by Pet MD. Check it out for tips on how to keep your cat’s teeth healthy and strong:

-Give them a yearly checkup at the vet

-Establish a cleaning routine when they are young.

-Brush their teeth! There is toothpaste made specifically for cats in flavors they will like. Brush their teeth with a kitty toothbrush or a finger wrapped in gauze

-Give them a healthy diet- a mix of wet and dry foods, and de-boned raw meat will keep kitty’s teeth strong.

Fun Winter Craft: How To Make “Bird Cake”

by Kathy T.

I’ve been having an unusually warm winter in my neck of the woods- many of the birds haven’t left for the south yet. And of course, some stick around all winter! I like to make sure they have some food available while the worms are frozen, so we usually put out some seed in our birdfeeder for them. That’s why I love this article by Red Ted Art. Here’s how to make a “bird cake” for your yard:

Ingredients:

Bird Seed

Lard

Peanuts

Grated Cheese

Raisins

Mix all into an empty yogurt pot, then hang from string in a tree! Birds also love plain popcorn and sunflower seeds, so some people hang those from bushes as well!
