Keeping Kitty Odor At Bay

by Kathy T.

4877576787_2ca5bb84e9_zI wrote last week about how to keep your home clean with pets. This one is going to be sort of related, though it’s specifically about cats. No one wants their home to smell like cat urine and litter box, even though it can seem like a constant uphill battle to eliminate that odor. However, there are ways that you can have cats without the smell! Check out these tips by  Maris Munkevics & Signe Munkevica at Pet Happy:

-Scoop out soiled litter daily and dispose of it

-Dump the whole box and put in fresh litter weekly

-Change your cat’s diet and feed him only high quality food

-Switch to a clumping litter brand, rather than an absorbent one.

Cleaning Tips For Pet Owners

by Kathy T.

8300920648_d4a21bba59_zHaving a pet is a lot of work, especially if you don’t want your home to smell like dog fur or kitty litter box. You have to be extra vigilant about accident messes, letting your dog outside, and changing the kitty litter. Check out this post by Wrapped In Rust for some great tips on keeping a clean house despite your pets:

-Use vaporub on areas that your dog/cat keeps marking his territory- it will mask his scent and keep him from doing it there again

-Groom and bathe your dog regularly to keep his smell level low

-Clean their bedding regularly

-Place a garage mat under the kitty litter box to keep kitty from tracking pet litter all over the house

Is Your Dog A Good Neighbor?

by Kathy T.

5221532381_f56e0cdc43_zI just moved in to a new place, and I love it! Well, for the most part. The only problem I’ve had so far is my closest neighbors. Well, not so much them, but their dog. They have one of the little yappy ones, and he barks all day long. It’s pretty annoying, and they’ve gotten complaints about him before. To make sure that this doesn’t happen to you, it’s important to ensure that your dog is a good neighbor. Check out this post by Sandy Robins at the Zillow blog for tips on keeping your pooch and your neighbors happy:

-Teach him how to “sit” and get “down” on command

-Always keep him on a leash if he’s not fenced in

-Pick up and dispose of his waste in public areas

To keep him from barking, make sure he can get outside when he needs to by having someone at the house all the time, or leave him in the yard if the weather is nice. Leave him plenty of toys and things to do so he doesn’t get bored. If you live in an apartment or a home without a fenced in yard, and have to leave your dog alone for 8+ hours a day, perhaps a dog is not the right pet for you at the time.

Cat Bath Tips

by Kathy T.

4321985755_d9e5b78e58_zIf you don’t know what you’re doing, giving a cat a bath can be a painful experience (trust me, I’ve learned from my mistakes). Generally, cats do not enjoy water or being bathed. They usually take care of that themselves, so I avoid doing it. However, if you need to wash them with flea shampoo, clean off skunk spray, or another special case, sometimes cats do need actual baths. Check out this post by the Step By Step Guide To Everything for tips on bathing a cat without getting scratched:

-Soothe your cat by petting her and getting her relaxed

-Trim your cat’s nails with cat nail clippers

-Fill bathtub with lukewarm water just high enough to cover your cat’s paws, and keep the door closed.

-Hold them steady and let them get used to the feeling, but don’t let them go

-Gently wet the cat and shampoo them, being extra careful around the eyes. Rinse them off and dry them with a fluffy towel
