Firefighter Rescues Husky

by Kathy T.

Last week, a Siberian husky named Sylvie accidentally fell through a thin patch of ice and into the freezing waters of Pleasure Bay in Boston. In an act of immense heroism, local fire fighter Sean P. Coyle raced into action and pulled her from the Bay. He even fell into the waters himself before getting the dog to safety, risking his own life to help an animal in need. You need to see the photos taken of the incident to get the full effect. Click here to see the photos from the Huffington Post article. They’ll give you goosebumps!

Getting Rid of Cat Urine Smell

by Kathy T.

I’m now the proud adoptive mama of an 8 month old male cat. His name is Kevin and he is the sweetest kitty I think I’ve ever met. He loves everyone he meets, is very cuddly and playful, and is pretty much the perfect indoor cat. There’s only one problem– his pee stinks to high heaven. He’s just hitting puberty and is not neutered (YET….), so it isn’t his fault, but it needs to be stopped. So, in my searches through tons of articles and vet sites, I think I’ve figured out how to eliminate it. Here’s what I’ve gathered through my searches:

  1. Get him neutered. It prevents them from spraying (female cats also spray occasionally!) and will reduce the odor in normal (non spray) urine. There’s all kinds of male hormones in urine, and neutering/spaying will stop these from being produced.
  2. Scoop the litter box every day– bag it up, toss it in the trash.
  3. Use an enzyme cleaner– you can find them at any pet store– that breaks down ammonia. Spray and wipe! I got a bottle of “Nature’s Miracle” from Petsmart the other day and it’s working pretty well.
  4. Air fresheners, candles, and incense do wonders as a temporary fix. If it’s not the dead of winter, you could try cracking a window (*caution: if a male cat sees another cat through the window, it could cause him to spray even more.)
  5. Invest in odor reducing kitty litter. It may cost a dollar or two extra, but it’s worth it.

Kevin is getting neutered in about 2 weeks. Until then, these other methods are helping a lot and I’d recommend them to anyone with cat pee problems!

High Tech Treat Dispenser

by Kathy T.

Here’s another “treat” for those of you with lots of love for your pets and more money than you need. Or maybe you just like really fancy gadgets that save you exactly .02 seconds of your day. Kidding aside, this thing is actually kinda fun. It’s a video controlled cat treat dispenser. This could be helpful if you have to travel a lot or can’t feed your cat at regular intervals. Plus, you get the added bonus of seeing your cat on video chat if you’ve been away from her for a long time. Your cat will also like it– because they get treats. The design comes from Oh Gizmo.com. Check it out if you want to know more!
