I’m now the proud adoptive mama of an 8 month old male cat. His name is Kevin and he is the sweetest kitty I think I’ve ever met. He loves everyone he meets, is very cuddly and playful, and is pretty much the perfect indoor cat. There’s only one problem– his pee stinks to high heaven. He’s just hitting puberty and is not neutered (YET….), so it isn’t his fault, but it needs to be stopped. So, in my searches through tons of articles and vet sites, I think I’ve figured out how to eliminate it. Here’s what I’ve gathered through my searches:
- Get him neutered. It prevents them from spraying (female cats also spray occasionally!) and will reduce the odor in normal (non spray) urine. There’s all kinds of male hormones in urine, and neutering/spaying will stop these from being produced.
- Scoop the litter box every day– bag it up, toss it in the trash.
- Use an enzyme cleaner– you can find them at any pet store– that breaks down ammonia. Spray and wipe! I got a bottle of “Nature’s Miracle” from Petsmart the other day and it’s working pretty well.
- Air fresheners, candles, and incense do wonders as a temporary fix. If it’s not the dead of winter, you could try cracking a window (*caution: if a male cat sees another cat through the window, it could cause him to spray even more.)
- Invest in odor reducing kitty litter. It may cost a dollar or two extra, but it’s worth it.
Kevin is getting neutered in about 2 weeks. Until then, these other methods are helping a lot and I’d recommend them to anyone with cat pee problems!
