Are You Ready For A Cat?

by Kathy T.

Cats are great pets! I love dogs too, but I definitely consider myself more of a cat person. They’re really popular with people who are just starting out on their own. They’re pretty easy to take care of and are adorable companions. But, just because they’re a little more chill than dogs, doesn’t mean that it’s gonna be a cake walk! They’re just like little kids that need to be supervised (especially if you have a kitten) and they are a responsibility. So, if you think you want a cat because you just want a cuddle buddy that you don’t need to take care of, think again! Ask yourself these questions before going through with it:

-Are your finances in order? This isn’t just kitty litter and food. Do you have enough in your budget to pay for vet expenses like shots, spaying, or neutering? Adoption fees? To pay a pet fee for your apartment? To pay for emergency vet visits? To pay for damages if they’re really hyper and destructive? Sometimes cats can be more of a handful than dogs.

-Are you emotionally and physically ready? One of the appeal of cats is that they’re pretty low maintenance. You just have to change their kitty litter, and make sure they have food and water. But, while some cats are incredibly laid back (and couldn’t care less about you), some crave attention and demand constant affection. If you have a job which leaves your cat at home alone for the majority of the day, it might not be for you. If you are also easily upset by cats destroying things (blinds, curtains, shower curtains, potted plants, cords that can be chewed, furniture) and cannot discipline them without violence, you may also want to reconsider.

Kitties are very loving, affectionate creatures! Taking care of them can be very rewarding and it isn’t a job to be taken lightly.

Friday Fun Video: Bringing a Pet Rabbit Into Your Home

by Kathy T.

Rabbits are great pets, as long as you know how to handle them! Plus, the bunny in this video is SO CUTE! A brand new rabbit may not be the best pet choice for people with younger (more hyper) kids.

Dog Paw Care 101

by Kathy T.

When we think of pet health, specifically dog health, only a few things come to mind. Diet, exercise, teeth, and maybe shots & vaccinations. Usually, the last things you think about are your pets’ feet! But, paw health is just as important as taking care of the rest of your dog’s body. Here’s how to do it, from the ilovedogssite:

Trimming- the nails should barely skim the ground. Clicking around everywhere= bad

Cracked pads- Pads do crack and bleed if they get too dry. Use a moisturizer specifically for dogs.

Summertime- don’t let dogs walk on extremely hot surfaces- stick to grass!

Wintertime- Excessive exposure to cold weather could cause paw pads to dry out. This will lead to pads becoming chapped and cracking.

Yorkie Mama and Her Five Kittens

by Kathy T.

I never get enough of adorable stories involving unlikely animal friendships. And this one is extra adorable! Ten year old Yorkshire Bridget had given birth to two puppies, but both had died. Thinking quickly, humane society workers placed a new litter of kittens with her. It was love at first sight! She is now raising the kittens as her own– and even nursing them. Check out the full article on Today.com for the fwhole story, and more adorable pictures!

Pet “Superfoods?”

by Kathy T.

I’m generally pretty skeptical about things- especially when products are presented as miracle cure-alls, and ESPECIALLY if someone is trying to sell me something. That’s why I find the idea of “Superfoods” dubious at best. Gluten-free. Kale. Acai. Chia Seeds. There’s a new one every month. Superfood diets and juicing “cleanses” are the new fads; and they all promise that you’ll live forever and never ever get sick. That’s pretty silly, but there is no denying that eating a balanced diet is the key to good health: for humans AND our pets! Check out this post by Dr. Ernie Ward Jr. on Go Pet Plan for a few “superfoods” to give to your fur babies, and judge them for yourself:

-Omega 3 Fatty Acids: Found in fishes. Anti-inflammatory, shines coat, may prevent cancer.

-Eggs: A HUGE source of protein.

-Chickpeas: Anti-oxidants, may prevent cancer.

-Celery: Full of fiber and anti-oxidants.

-Plain, Unflavored Yogurt: Supports digestion and immune health.

These sound pretty reasonable. No products are being sold, the health benefits are scientifically explained, and it was published by a doctor. Seems legit to me!
