Cat Toy Crochet Pattern

by Kathy T.

I absolutely love crocheting. I’ve only taken it up in the past year or so, but it’s easy to learn, cheap, and I love the feeling of making something new, pretty, and useful. I’ve made a baby blanket, washcloths, coasters, drawstring bags, slippers, and I’ve just started learning how to make “amigurumi” (stuffed toys). I also love my cat. This pattern for a crocheted catnip toy by Amy Lim at Nicely Created For You is perfect for me, and all the other crazy cat ladies out there. All it takes is the single crochet stitch, the chain stitch, and decreasing. Check it out!

DIY Pet Spray

by Kathy T.

Last year, I lived in an apartment with an adolescent male cat, and a kitten. Now, I live in a house with two cats and two dogs. So, I understand what “bad pet odor” is. Cat urine, litter boxes, wet dog- I’ve lived with all of it. But, while I love my pets, and my house is always cluttered and messy, the one thing I can’t stand is a dirty house. Dirty dishes, trash everywhere, animal feces on the floors, roaches- the thought of it just makes my skin crawl. I don’t mind a little chaos, as long as the trash is where it belongs and the house smells clean and fresh. That’s why I love this post by Joanna at Jojotastic for DIY pet odor spray. Check out her recipe:

  • 2 cups distilled water
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • a few sprigs of dried lavender (optional)

Simply combine the baking soda and essential oils in a bowl with a fork. Fill a spray bottle with water and add the mixture along with dried lavender.

DO NOT Give Your Cat….

by Kathy T.

My cat loves “people” food. She’ll eat anything: Poptarts, Cheetos, pickles, bread- if I’m eating it, she wants some too. Usually, I shoo her away and make sure she has enough dry cat food. But sometimes, I can’t resist her big, adorable kitten eyes and I give her a bite. I know it’s bad, since many “people” foods can be very harmful- even fatal- for kitties. Read this post at Lovable Friends, for a list of foods to never give to your cat, including one that’s very surprising:

-Cow milk (!)

-Bones or seeds

-Anything citrus

-Mushrooms

-Fat and liver

-Onions and garlic

-Chocolate, coffee, alcohol, or tea

-Tuna (an occasional treat is fine, but overdoing it is bad!)

Cat Hacks!

by Kathy T.

Cats, depending on their personalities, are pretty low maintenance pets. You give them food every day, play with them, and change their litter every week or so. There’s not a whole lot more to them. However, as simple as cats are to please, they can sometimes be a handful. Why not make you and your cat’s life easier and try out some of these ideas by Peggy Wang at Buzzfeed:

-Fold in toilet paper when not in use to keep Kitty from shredding it

-Remove a cabinet door panel and add a curtain with a tension rod to hide a litter box.

– Cut out squares in a bookshelf to create a kitty exercise tower.

-Give your cat a place to hang out besides your workspace by flipping over the top of a board game box.

-Save money by growing your own catnip
