Why You Should Adopt A Black Cat This Fall

by Kathy T.

Most people know the old superstition that if a black cat crosses your path, you’ll have bad luck. But did you know that people actually that superstition seriously? It may seem crazy in our day and age, but just because of that, black cats are far less likely to be adopted from shelters, and are more often victims of abuse. So, if you are thinking of welcoming a cat into your home any time soon, consider a dark furred friend! For more reasons why black cats rock, check out this post by Petco:

-In Scotland, a stray black cat arriving at your home may mean you will win a jackpot!

-Fishermen and their wives thought black cats were good luck, and would keep them in their homes and boats.

-You won’t see black cat fur on black clothes. Win!

-In Japan, black cats are thought to be good luck- particularly for single women. They are said to attract suitors!

Dogs Scared Of Loud Noises

by Kathy T.

We adopted our dog Libby from the shelter when she was about two years old. We have no idea where she came from, or what she lived through for those two years. All we know is she had a lot of issues when we got her, despite how sweet she was. She refused to go up and down stairs, she hated being left alone, and she was absolutely terrified of loud noises like fireworks or thunder. Now, noise phobia is common in a lot of dogs. But with some patience and loving, you can help make them more comfortable (and less freaked out) when storms happen. Check out this post by Dr. Karen Becker at Healthy Pets for tips on helping out noise phobic dogs:

-Do not reward or reinforce anxious behavior- petting and saying “it’s ok,” may be your first instinct, but with a dog, it is a reward and encourages them to repeat the behavior.

-Lead your dog to a quiet, still room, and let them self-soothe or sit with them.

-Put calm pressure on your dog if they allow it- lean against them without petting. If it helps them, there are anxiety and thunder wraps you can buy for them.

-Always bring pets inside before a storm or fireworks display. Dogs regularly run away or seriously injure themselves attempting to escape.

DIY Crochet Mouse

by Kathy T.

I love crocheting, and I love my cat. I also love making gifts for others (no I’m not a grandma yet, I just have a grandma soul)! When I saw this crochet mouse toy pattern by RC at NyanPon.com, I was so excited! It’s so cute! Stuff it with some catnip and stuffing, and your cat will love you forever. Here’s the pattern for you fellow crochet geeks! It’s a fairly easy and cute amigurumi style toy!

“Dog Repellant” Ideas

by Kathy T.

Do you have problems with dogs laying in your flower beds? Digging under the fence? Peeing on your vegetable garden? Obviously, you still have to let the dogs outside, but how do you teach them what out there is off limits? Check out this genius idea by Jamie Conrad at Daily Puppy— it’s DIY “dog repellant” that you can use on outdoor spaces that you want your dog to steer clear of (don’t worry, it won’t harm your plants). Here are their tips:

-Cut up oranges/lemons, sprinkle the areas with the fruit bits. Dogs hate the smell of citrus.

-Use citrus essential oil + water in a spray bottle, spray the areas.

-Sprinkle chili powder on soil, grass, etc. It will irritate dog’s nose, they will avoid the area. Never put chili powder directly onto your dog.

-Soak coffee filters in vinegar, let try, then cut up into strips. Sprinkle these on grass. Dogs hate vinegar and will avoid areas where you leave them.

Table Scraps You CAN Feed Your Dog

by Kathy T.

I always see posts about human food that is dangerous for dogs- never give them chocolate, chicken bones, alcohol, avocado, or fish. However, my dogs will eat anything, and as long as it isn’t dangerous for them, I don’t mind feeding them some “people food” every once in a while. While table scraps should not be the main component of your dog’s diet (it should only be used as a treat occasionally), there are some foods that are perfectly fine to give them. Check out this post by Easy Home Made for what you CAN give to your pooch:

-Apples and peanut butter

-Frozen berries (perfect treats for teaching dogs tricks)

-Bananas

-Leftover meat with small bones removed

-Cooked eggs

-Popcorn
