Healthy Herbs For Kitties

by Kathy T.

Having an herb garden is not only beneficial to you, but also your pets! Giving cats certain grasses to chew on can help with digestion, exercising, allergies, and relaxation. And it goes way beyond catnip! Plus, most are also edible for humans. It’s a win-win. Check out this post by Nicolas at Care2 for the best herbs to give to your cats:

Valerian- Works as a stimulant for cats, and helps them get more exercise.

Licorice Root- Soothes itchy kitties with allergies

Cat Thyme- has similar soothing effects like catnip

Down, Boy! : How To Get Your Dog To Stop Jumping

by Kathy T.

I have two of the sweetest, dumbest dogs in the world. They love everyone, and seeing people is the highlight of their day (besides getting fed), and they have a tendency to get over-excited and jump up on people. While I personally don’t think it’s a problem (I love my dogs! I’m glad that they’re happy to see me!), I recognize that not everyone is a dog lover and won’t appreciate their enthusiasm. So, we’re slowly working on fixing their jumping. If you have a problem with your dogs jumping on people, read this article by Kristina N. Lotz at I Heart Dogs:

-Teach your dog to sit for attention, or to go to a mat when someone comes to the door.

-Ignore them when they do jump.

-Once he stops jumping, give him what he wants (attention, a treat, etc.). Reward the good behavior!

-Everyone in your home has to be on board!

Natural Remedies For Doggie Dental Care

by Kathy T.

My dogs have the nastiest smelling breath I’ve ever had the displeasure of smelling. I know we could definitely be doing more for their teeth, so I’ve been on the lookout for tips on oral hygiene for dogs. After all, you can’t exactly hold them down and brush their teeth for them every day. Instead, give them chew toys that scrape plaque and gunk off their teeth and gums. For more tips on naturally caring for your dogs’ teeth, read this post by Jaima at Ring Around The Rosies:

-Brush your dog’s teeth with a hard bristle toothbrush and some coconut oil every month.

-Add a tablespoon of coconut oil to dog food every once in a while. It kills oral bacteria, and leaves coats shiny as a bonus!

Keeping Your Cat Active

by Kathy T.

My cat has always been extremely active. From the time she was a six week old kitten, to now as a 14-year-old golden girl, she has always loved running, jumping, and playing. All I have to do is bust out the laser pointer, and she is ready to run! However, some cats grow extremely lazy in their old age. All they want to do is sleep, sleep, and maybe eat. While it’s pretty normal behavior, it can be unhealthy for your cat. They need exercise to stay fit! Check out these tips by Go Pet Plan for ways to get them off their furry little butts and get them playing:

-Buy a kibble-dispensing toy, or make your own by cutting holes in a paper towel roll.

-Provide different, high perches for your cat to jump on.

-Open the windows and let your cat explore the outdoors by looking through a screen.
