Hens and Chicks

by permafrog Leave a Comment

The carnival is in town and they spent today setting up. I realize that this has nothing to do with gardening but my garden is about 75 yards from a few of the rides so it seemed like a good tie-in.

I planted the lupines today the weather was perfect and it is supposed to rain for the next three days so I wanted to get them in. I also planted, near the sidewalk, some hens and chicks.  I have been thinking about hens and chicks for a couple of years but this is the first planting . The site is hot and dry, they should do well.

A Rain Garden

by permafrog Leave a Comment

The rain continues, I was going to plant the hens and chicks today, along with the lupines that I bought yesterday but it is still too wet.

I began to think about rain and gardening and the amount of water that just rolls down the street, I can see this from my wndow as I type and what a waste that is. Then I thought about an article that  I had read sometime back about rain gardens. So I went looking for a blogger who has had actual experience building one. I found this blog, My Native Rain Garden.

A rain garden would be ideal for the site next door, a means to hold the water on site and improve its appearance at the same time. I am going to add this to my plans for next Spring. I might dig the bed this Fall, though.

Salmon Festival Begins

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Rain again today, i got some work done next door before heading inside. Tomorrow I plant.

The 4oth annual Salmon Festival begins tonight with week long events that include a street fair and amusement park. This is our first and I am looking forward to visiting some of the events and enjoying the fare that is an important part of any regional festival.

Community Green Space

by permafrog 1 Comment

The rain is holding up the work in the lot next door. It is amazing how many rocks there are on that site. There was a house there once but very little of that remains.  So I am indoors today simply surfing and seeking inspiration.

I came across the Earthly Gardens blog and the current item is about community green spaces. I often feel, as I walk around the various cities and towns, that I have lived in and viisited that people do not pay enough attention to their parks and green spaces. Often they seem empty or at best underused. Now I know there are exceptions to that and I’d like to here about them.

Do you spend time in a park or green space where you live?

Music or Not

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Generally, I do not like to play music when I am outside. I prefer listeing to the sounds around me. The birds are especial favourites.

However, there are those times when I am in the mood but still do not want to block out the other sounds that are part of the outdoors experience. Well this portable speaker featured over at Shaktronics is the answer.

Now you can take yout tunes to the garden, stay unplugged and sing along as you weed and deadhead, sounds like a perfect afternoon. Come to think of it, this may be what I need as I clean and prep the site next door. Music will keep me moving.

Asters are my choice for the first plant that I will introduce to the site. This took some thought but asters and dandelions are cousins so the asters should do well. Next year, lupines and columbine  will join them.

The Greening Project is on.

by permafrog Leave a Comment

I received permission from the City of Campbellton today to proceed with the greening project on the lot near my home. City Council approved the project so there are just a few formalities and then the work begins.

The picture shows the lot as it now stands. This year I will be working on the space, in the foreground, where you see the gravel and generally keeping garbage off the rest of the site. As the work progresses I will post updates.
