Gardening for Mind and Body

by permafrog Leave a Comment

If you are a gardener you are already participating in one
of the best mind-body exercises there is. The time you spend in your garden doing
the chores that help it grow can provide you with a regular workout that will
help keep you fit.

Weeding, deadheading, turning soil, moving plants all keeps
you active and it can create a scenic and serene spot where you can rest after
a day’s work.

Gardening also allows your mind to rest as you contemplate the beauty of a
flower or has you pull that weed with a quiet determination.

There are the other benefits as well, food and flowers for your home and table.
The hours spent sitting in the sun or shade and simply watching the bees buzz
and the butterflies flutter can rest and refresh both mind and body.

Down Memory Lane

by permafrog 2 Comments

I was thinnking about the garden that my mother used to keep and the plants that she loved. Hollyhocks, peonies and bachelor buttons all had their place.

My love of all things green comes from my parents but it was the english country garden that awoke my interest in design. I just paid a visit to the blog, Notes From A Cottage Garden. The pictures alone are worth stopping by.

The bachelor button is a versatile plant that is native to many areas and very easy to grow. They look great along a front walk or in a field.

Roadside Flowers

by permafrog Leave a Comment

We just got back from two days in Moncton, NB.  The rain began about an hour into the drive but even the wet weather could not hide the beauty of the wildflowers that grow along the roadside.

The lupines are out in full bloom. Of course in is not wise for either passenger or driver to take their eyes off the highway for any length of time especially where there are moose warning signs. We did not see any moose this time but on our last trip, both on the way there  and back again, we saw moose. At one point there were two young ones, but still big enough to do damage, crossing the highway about 150 yards in front of us.

We slowed down to make sure they got across but they took their own sweet time to do so.

Asters

by permafrog Leave a Comment

The amusement park has departed for its next lcoation. Canada Day has come and gone. I can get back to the gardening next door. While the amusement park was operating I did not want to draw much attention to the spot, cars were parking near by and the foot traffic was heavy, so I just let it be.

Tomorrow we head out of town for a few days, when we get back. I will add a garden, making three in all. This one is for the asters. Asters and dandelions are relatives so they will do fine.

The Tomatoes are in flower

by permafrog Leave a Comment

I was becoming a bit concerned that my six tomato plants had not begun to flower. We have short summers and this one is off to a cool start with temperatures around 12-20 degress Celsius. I love fried green tomatoes, both the movie and the food, but am really looking forward to a toasted tomato sandwich on 12 grain bread with romaine lettuce  and a touch of mustard or mayo.

So yesterday I went out to take a look and there they were little yellow flowers. Now we are getting ample rain but need some heat, I do like the cool weather but need it to warm up a few degrees. It’s the end of June we have 8-9 weeks left, maybe 10, some tomatoes will ripen in that time. So I am remaining hopeful.
