Summer is the perfect time of the year for reading outdoors. It’s sunny and warm, and what better way to kill a few hours by the pool, at the beach, or on the yacht than with a little Dan Brown or Nicholas Sparks to keep your attention? Unfortunately, if you’re a user of Amazon’s Kindle, you might not be in a hurry to take your expensive new electronic e-book reader out to the sand and surf for fear of stray water droplets destroying your precious gadget. This is where the M-Edge Guardian Case comes in.
The M-Edge is basically a hard plastic shell to protect your tender gadget’s electric innards. It’s padded, has a slip-resistant rubber coating on the back, and best of all, is completely waterproofed and tested for safety up to depths of 1 meter (or about 3 feet). Wired took their Kindle to the beach AND threw it in the washing machine with no ill effects, thereby earning the gadget positive reviews. The M-Edge even floats, should you want to laze on a raft and float your Kindle along beside you (possibly as a drink tray?).
The only downside to the M-Edge (aside from its $80 price tag) is its weight. It nearly triples the weight of the Kindle; however, you’re going to be reading it, not using it as a Frisbee, so you want as much protection as you can get from the elements. There’s also no access to the power button, but access ports for all the other important buttons. Maybe that’s something they can fix with the M-Edge 2?
