One thing I’ll always be thankful for is my years as a Girl Scout. I learned so much with them as I grew; camping and survival skills, social skills, basic cooking, business skills, a love for the arts, a passion for helping others and volunteering, how to manage my time and organize events- I could name things all night. And I made friends that I still have to this day. One of the most useful badges that I specifically remember getting was a First Aid badge. We learned basic first aid, CPR, and what to do in dangerous situations. (Seriously, sign your daughters up for a Girl Scout troop now).
But, you don’t have to be a Girl Scout, an EMT, or a highly trained lifeguard to recognize the value of learning first aid and other safety skills. There are some things that EVERYONE should know how to do, even little kids. Especially little kids; they need to know how to react in a situation where an adult might not be around. -How and when to call 911
-Their name, address, and phone number, in case they get separated
-Make a fire plan for your home
-Take a trip to the fire station- it’s fun, and it’s important for kids to know that firefighters are good guys if one has to come and get them in an emergency.
-Teach them that no adult should ask a child for help. It’s not good to be scared of strangers, but kids should know that adults do not need help looking for a lost puppy, or directions.
