I’m completely addicted to watching random Youtube videos, and I recently stumbled upon lots of Youtubers who talk about living a minimalist lifestyle. One video I watched was about a girl and how she could fit everything she owned into the backseat of her car. Another was about a guy who only has one pair of shoes. I even watched some “Zero Waste” videos, about people who refuse to buy items that are packaged in plastic. It’s all super interesting, and the people in the videos look so happy and put together.
While I know that real life is a lot more complicated than a 3 minute sound byte or a 140 character tweet, I do know how liberating it is to get rid of a lot of junk. I’ve done a “purge” of all my stuff a few times in my life (usually right before I move to a new place). It makes moving easier, it makes cleaning easier, and it makes your new place less cluttered, and your mind less cluttered.
So, if you are suddenly unhappy in your home, it’s important to take a good look around. Do you feel like your house is full of unnecessary junk? That’s because it probably is. Check out this post by Rachel at A Mother Far From Home for how she deals with keeping her home clutter free. She does a “house walk” every now and then. Read here for more:
You go from room to room and write down things that need doing. Go from room to room, area to area, and mark down what things you need to buy/move/replace/get rid of. In fact, as you’re walking, you’ll probably get quite a few things picked up, done, or put into piles to help you with this. You won’t need tons of time, but I’d try to do the entire house (or a least each floor) at once because then you’ll see where you can move from one room to another.
The result may surprise you. It’s amazing how one small tweak can make all the difference.
