Blogging Job: Work From Home

by Miranda Marquit Leave a Comment

As a work from home professional, I know how difficult it can be to find job leads. Here’s a great one that was brought to my attention by Yvonne Russell at Small Biz Mentor:

Blogging Position

Two bloggers wanted at Corporate Eye: one to cover the Investor Relations section of corporate websites, and one to cover the Careers section …

In both cases, we’re interested in the major listed companies (FTSE100,
FTSE250, S&P500, Eurotop300 etc) but if a smaller company is doing
something interesting, we’d like it to be covered.

  Please note:
We’re not interested in stocks/shares or investment tips, or in
interview tips/advice to candidates – we’re interested in what
companies are doing online.

More information on the site …  If anyone knows someone suitable, please ask them to contact us at jobs@corporate-eye.com.

If you have some expertise in one of these areas, visit the Corporate Eye Web site for more information. WorkShak is not affiliated with Corporate Eye.

This could also offer you a great opportunity to raise the profile of your work from home business, and establish yourself as an expert.

Social media is becoming increasingly important when it come to promoting your home business online. And one way to do this is through business blogging. But you do need to be able to promote your home business blog when you do this. And Facebook Pages offers a new way to do this. Problogger offers a look at Facebook Pages, and how it can help you home business blog:

Once you have created a page on Facebook, people can then become your
“fan” or “supporter”. You don’t have to accept people as a fan and they
can’t see your individual profile. On a page you can then easily add
relevant pictures and video. You can have a discussion board and add
any of the thousands of applications to your page.

Going on Vacation? Try Pre-Posting to Your Business Blog

by Miranda Marquit Leave a Comment

I’m at my grandpa’s house. I’d rather be fishing. But I’m writing a blog post. If I’d pre-posted this, I’d be catching some trout. But I’m not.

One of the best things you can do for your home business blog is to be familiar with the process of pre-posting. If you plan ahead, you can write your blog posts ahead of time, and then posting them doesn’t cut into your precious vacation time.

Now, it’s time for me to hit the stream.

Watch Out for Work From Home Scams

by Miranda Marquit Leave a Comment

One of the dreams that many people have is to work from home. And there is no shortgage of ads — especially on the Internet — touting "easy" work from home jobs. But it is important to beware these ads, since many of them are scams. The Hartford Courant reports on the prolific nature of work from home scams online:

"There is a 48-to-1 scam ratio among ‘work from home’ job ads on the Internet!" This figure is well above last year’s 42-to-1 and the previous year’s 30-to-1.

While there are valid work from home jobs to be found, it is important to watch out for those that sound too good to be true. Especially avoid work from home jobs that promise an easy way to make a lot of money, and be wary of work from home jobs that require a small "investment" to get started.

Working from Home: Don’t Forget to Fund Your Retirement

by Miranda Marquit Leave a Comment

When you first begin working from home, there are so many things to think about and arrange that it can be difficult to think of arranging things like a retirement account. However, it is very important that you remember to fund your retirement.

If you are telecommuting, you can still take advantage of your employer’s retirement plan (don’t forget the matching funds!). This can be a great way to get started with saving for retirement.

If you have a home business, or if you are a sole proprietorship, you can still get the benefits of tax preferred accounts when saving for retirement. You can look into:

*IRA (or Roth IRA)
*Solo 401k (and Roth)
*SIMPLE
*Keogh

Speak with a knowledgeable accountant about your options, and start saving for retirement today.

Are You an Expert in Your Field?

by Miranda Marquit Leave a Comment

When it comes to your home business, one of the most important things you can do is become an expert in your field. This  will raise your profile, and can result in some very interesting perks and opportunities.

Yvonne Russell at Home Biz Notes offers some helpful hints for becoming an expert in your field
:

*Get to know local reporters (and be available for comment).
*Write a related business blog.
*Offer a workshop.
*Be available for guest speaking (especially for local groups and for free).
*Do interviews when asked.
*Try to build a business profile in the local newspaper.

Can you think of other ways to become recognized as an expert in your field?

Telecommuting: The New Work from Home Job

by Miranda Marquit 3 Comments

85749062_ba5khm
When most people say that they work from home, the image of a home business almost immediately pops to mind. However, telecommuting is becoming increasingly popular as a work from home job. And with technology where it is today — and likely to improve further — there is no reason that many jobs can’t be accomplished remotely from home.

Indeed, many workers are open to being able to work from home, even if it means a pay cut, reports InformationWeek:

In a poll of more than 1,500 IT workers, 37% of respondents said they
would be willing to take "slightly less" pay to telecommute full time.
The survey defined "slightly less" as up to a 10% reduction in salary.

But it’s not just IT workers that can do the job telecommuting. JetBlue is probably one of the most famous examples of providing a work from home job. Most of the airline reservations are made by home workers. Many other jobs are conducive to a remote environment as well.

In The World is Flat, Thomas Friedman points out that companies benefit just as much as home workers (who save time and — more importantly gas money — with work from home job opportunities):

*Increased productivity.
*Increased loyalty to the company.
*Fewer overhead costs to the company.

Do You Need to Learn to Say “No”?

by Miranda Marquit Leave a Comment

Sometimes it is necessary to say "no". And, sometimes for the sake of sanity and balance, you need to cut back. Look at your home business, and at your life.

Is everything going how you would like it to? Are you taking on too much? Do you have side projects that are taking up time without contributing to your home business?

Jennifer Hoffman at MyOrganizedBiz recently offered some insight into her thought process regarding her home business and cutting back:

After I reflected for a couple of days, I realized that in order to do
create a new relationship with my business, I had to: A. cut out some
of the things I have been doing and B. start learning to say “no” to
the inevitable other things I might say “yes” to since I’m such a time
optimist.

Do you need a new relationship with your home business? And what can you do to get that?
