2007: A Few Favorites

It’s the last day of 2007, so I can’t help but reminisce about some of my favorite finds of the past year. Here they are in no particular order:

Favorite Furniture Steal: The Hemnes collection at Ikea.

This stuff is classic, simple and striking. I recently checked out a few pieces in store, and they were sturdy and well-made, no screws showing or peeling veneer.

The collection includes a bed, side table, this fabulous mirrored dresser, and a beautiful chest of drawers. Pieces range from $49.99 – $349.99.

Favorite Artist Discovered Online: Linzie Hunter

I’m completely infatuated with Linzie Hunter’s collection of Spam One-Liners. The handmade typography is striking and the messages are a fascinating snap-shot of online life. Prints of the one-liners are available at Thumbtack Press for $30 a piece.

Favorite Online Gift Source: Etsy

It’s handmade, it’s quirky, it’s the perfect place to find that thing that you can be sure they don’t already have. I love shopping on Etsy. From toilet tank decals to mean bags to cute, swear-word embroidered bunnies, I found most of my holiday gifts right here online.

Favorite Source of Decorating Inspiration/Frustration: Zara Home

The images from their catalog are soul-crushingly gorgeous and they have no American retail outlets. And even though cruising their site makes me want to rip my hair out from frustration, Zara Home is one of my favorite sources of decorating inspiration.

Flat Life

This installation, appropriately name Flat Light, is from the Flat Life exhibit at the Design Museum, London. The series is meant to be an advertisement for the product, showing it being un-crated and set up.

Designer Plates

Check out these eclectic plates that Give Simple is featuring! They were hailed in Daily Candy this year and after taking a closer look I can see why!

Fragiles: Porcelain, Glass, and Ceramics

If you like porcelain, ceramics and glass, check out the web site for Fragiles, an exhibit of works by various artists meant to challenge what people think can be done with these materials. It’s presented by Die Gestalten Verlag in conjunction with Design Miami 2007.

Spam One-Liners

A few weeks ago, I discovered some amazing Spam art on Flicker (thanks to Joshua Blankenship’s blog).

The creator of this art, Linzie Hunter, takes quotes from some of the Spam she finds in her in-box and turns them into amazing hand-lettered posters.

We’ve all been annoyed to death by Spam, but it can also be quite funny at times. So I instantly fell in love with the series.

Now I’m so happy to say that Linzie is selling 9 prints from her Spam series at Thumbtack Press. The prints, which vary in size, are $29.99 a piece.

Musings: Photography and Painting by Darlene Shiels

Why the Caged Bird Sings

I’m not sure that caged birds appreciate living in a decorating icon. But bird cages certainly do paint a pretty picture.

Finds from the SCAD Online Store

The Savannah College of Art and Design is a great resource for reasonably priced art and furnishings. If you don’t live near by, don’t worry. They have a fabulous online store. I stopped by to check for new items yesterday a found some treasures.

The Mecedora Rocker by Daniella Pena, $1700.

The Lawn Chair Pillow by Laura Davis, $60.

"Bird" framed chromogenic print by Dan Saelinger, $500. I may have posted about this photographer before. This print is one of my all-time favorites.

Clair Coles' Wallpaper Panels

Clair Coles, an artist designer from the UK, is using vintage wallpaper scraps to make one-of-a-kind wallpaper panels. She combines multiple wallpaper patterns and sometimes fabric with her own hand-stitched designs. The layering and choice of subject, which has included winding tendrils of flowers and coquettish women, combine for a dramatically decadent affect.

Pretty City Art

Here is some more lovely and affordable art made from type. This is "Barcelona" from Granada Design’s Cities collection. The names are screen printed on fabric and each canvas costs $135 plus shipping.

Not bad.
