Indoor Games To Play With Your Pooch

by Kathy T.

Since most of the US is going through/coming out of a drought right now (not to mention the unbearable heat), chances are, dogs are being kept inside most of the time. Which is good! If you’re not leaving your dog out in the hot sun all day, you are a responsible pet parent. The thing is though, dogs need to be outside. They have to play and run and do….dog stuff. So, how can you channel your dog’s hyperactivity and need to play into a safe activity…one that doesn’t involve him getting heatstroke? You play with him of course! Check out this post by Jayme Heimbuch at Mother Nature Network for some great indoor doggie games to play…whether you’re having a rainy day or an incredibly hot one:

–Teaching your dog to discover prizes using only his nose is a great game for the body and mind. Hide toys or bones under boxes and have him sniff them out.

-If you have a stairwell, make it a game to run up it and burn some serious energy. To get the most exercise from this game with the least risk to your dog’s joints, start at the bottom of the stairs. Put your dog in a sit-stay and throw the toy up to the top landing.

-If you’re going to do something, go all-in, right? Setting up an obstacle course for your dog and helping teach him how to navigate the obstacles is a lot of fun.

Stop Animal Allergies In Their Tracks

by Kathy T.

One of the hardest things to deal with as an animal lover is having pet-related allergies. One time, a lost pet rabbit wandered into our yard– she was big, gray, and fluffy, and didn’t run away when people approached her. We built a makeshift pen for her in our back yard until we found her a home. I only got to pet her a few times, and every time I did, I had a massive allergy attack. My eyes would get itchy and red, and I’d sneeze for about an hour afterward. I’ve had the same reaction to horse dander (I used to live in Kentucky!) and sometimes, to cats and dogs, but only if I spend a TON of time with them, and get their hair all over me. Having both pets and allergies is hard, but it’s possible if you know how to manage them. Check out this post by Chelsea at Two Twenty One for tips on reducing allergens in the home:

-Dust, then vacuum

-Always vacuum under the bed

-Don’t let your pets sleep with you; maybe have them sleep in a different room

-Vacuum couches and chairs

-Wash bedding and blankets regularly

-Use an air filter to trap pet dander

Cleaning Up After Pets

by Kathy T.

I love animals; my cats and dogs are my life. I love playing with them, spending time with them, going outside with them, and all the unconditional love that they bring. But, for all the joy that they give, there is one major downside to having pets: they sure are messy. Yes, you let your dog outside a few times a day, yes, your cat is litter box trained, but sometimes there are accidents. Dogs tend to get stinky, even after a bath, and don’t forget about all the pet hair that you have to deal with. Getting pets groomed a few times a year is a good solution, but sometimes you simply can’t afford it. So, how do you keep the inside of your home from smelling like a zoo? Well, check out this post by Julia at Cuckoo 4 Design. Note: this is not a sponsored post, these are simply products that she has used and found helpful. I’ll post the ones that I also have experience with:

-Clumping litter with odor eliminator, scooped at least twice a day.

-Nature’s Miracle for accidents- I have used this before for cat urine and it REALLY IS a miracle!

-Clorox Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner- for vomit and other dark stains on carpet

This is especially important if you are selling your home! Visible pet hair during open houses and showings is a huge turn off to buyers.

Pet Care On The Cheap

by Kathy T.

We all love our pets, but sometimes they can be expensive little beasts. Food, kitty litter, poop scoops, flea treatments, pet deposits, damage repair, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, vet visits… it can add up, and get very, very, pricey. However, just because you are low on funds doesn’t mean you shouldn’t open up your home and heart to a little fur baby. There are plenty of ways to save big on pet care- from couponing, to discount clinics, to DIYing. If you love your pet but need to save money, check out this post by Kristi at Premeditated Leftovers for great tips:

Buy Generic Flea & Tick Treatment

Show around for pet meds

Consider pet health insurance

Use coupons
