Flower or Vegetables is that a Question?

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Over the years I have designed and grown a wide range of gardens from a
one pot with tomatoes and basil on my balcony to a 1 acre commercial
operation. One reoccurring question raised through all these various
gardens’ projects over a 17 year period is whether to grow flowers or
not.

Gardening Makes You Healthy and Wise

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Gardening, no matter what you grow, will help you become healthy and
wise, as for wealthy well, that all depends upon how you define wealth.

Gardening will make you healthy through the act of gardening itself and
through eating the fruits of your labour; it will also make you wise as
you discover the wonders of growing things. Will it make you wealthy?
Well that is all up to you and what you believe wealth to be.

Let the flowers speak

by permafrog Leave a Comment

This is a post-valentine’s day entry.

Flowers have been used for centuries as symbols for our
emotions, the feelings that we may keep locked inside for whatever
reason or the words that seem to fail us when most needed.

How Did You Spend Your Day?

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Jane Perone over the the Horitcultural blog asked her readers: How did you spend your Sunday?  My answere was basically sitting out another winter storm, much like yesterday and this morning. It is clearing now but the snow sits deep and my backyard is practically non existent, so today  I wander the blogosphere and read about gardening.

How are you spending your day?

Growing Beans, Corn, Squash

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Perhaps, one of the oldest plant communities that we know of is the
Three Sisters, beans, corn and squash. It is a First Nations planting
method that goes back for several centuries and is often associated
with the Iroquois.

Now corn is not often a crop that a
backyard gardener, unless the backyard is a good size will plant but it
can be a great community garden crop and the sisters can make an
excellent shared garden within a community garden.

However, if you have the space or simply want to experiment then the 3 sisters will increase your yield and reduce your labour.  more

Houseplants

by permafrog Leave a Comment

A home is not complete unless there is at least one houseplant living there. It does not matter how big your space is, you can find a plant that fits into your overall design as long as you place the plant where it gets the sunlight that it needs and remember to water it.

I am redesigning my living room and need new houseplants. there is very little light but there is a corner near the window that looks ideal for one of my favourite houseplants, the spider plant.

Picking one favourite is difficult;  if you had to choose just one houseplant, which would it be?

The Winter Blahs

by permafrog Leave a Comment

It is much warmer today than it has been and the sun was shining. I think we may be on the way to setting a record snowfall, it is early February and planting season is a long way off, so seeking some company I went blog surfing and found Bert’s Bloomers.

it is comforting to know others are experiencing similar situations.

The Organic Front Yard

by permafrog Leave a Comment

The first step in making that plan is to find out what city bylaws
or other rules affect your front yard. You do not want to draw the
wrath of the local bylaw department down on you and find you have fined
for having a messy yard. So check with city hall first.

Once
you know the rules, you can begin to the plan. You may find that a well
drafted plan that clearly sets out your intentions, along with plant
lists, will convince the authorities to stretch the rules a bit.

How to Grow Great Tomatoes

by permafrog Leave a Comment

The tomato is one of the most commonly grown plants for home gardeners.
They are reasonable easy to care for, once you get them started which I
do indoors from seed about six weeks before I put them out.
