Avoiding Compacted Soil

by permafrog Leave a Comment

While I was reading the my tiny plot blog, I was reminded abut the importance of avoiding complicating your gardening chores my stepping on your garden bed and compacting the soil. This just makes the work harder and why would anyone willingly to that?

You can use a board to step on rather than stepping directly on the bed or you can deign the garden so that all parts of it can be reached from the sides.

Another option is the keyhole garden which often takes the shape of a circle or oval that has what resembles a keyhole or two strategically placed into the bed so that from the centre of the keyhole you can reach all around the bed.

I will expand upon this another day.

Hydroponic Gardening: An Introduction

by permafrog 3 Comments

Hydroponic gardening is an ideal way for people who do not have
enough space to lay out a garden or who do not want to deal with soil
to grow, herbs, flowers and vegetables. Hydroponic uses mineral
solutions instead of soil as the growing medium.

There are several basic types of hydroponic systems and you will select the one that best suits your resources and needs.

Extending The Gardening Season

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Fortunately for the gardener who does not want to be totally
dependent upon the weather there are ways to extend the gardening
season and you can incorporate those ways into yoru garden plan.

A
greenhouse tops the list of ways that you can extend your gardening
season. However, you may lack the resources (space and funds) to build
one.

The next best way to create a longer
growing season is the use of poly film. You can uses black poly film to
warm the soil; suppress weeds and as a mulch. Your local plant nursery
is likely to carry a black, bio-degradable poly film that will do the
job. I have used this method several times over the years and have been
quite pleased with the results

Worm Composting

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Worms ate my garbage that is what you will be able to say when you
put a worm composter in your kitchen. Worm composting or vermiculture
is an ideal way to dispose of kitchen vegetable matter that you would
otherwise toss in the garbage. Or if you have an outdoor composter, an indoor compost box
can save you a trip into your backyard on those cold winter or rainy
nights.

What Can We Learn from the Garden?

by permafrog Leave a Comment

What can we learn when we garden? Perhaps, the most important lesson
we lean when we garden is patience. Plants do not pop up over night;
even radishes, which are fairly quick growing and an ideal plant for a
child’s garden (28 days to maturity) take some time.

We
have to wait and to provide the care that the plant requires, while we
u are waiting, if we want it to grow; so we learn responsibility. If we
neglect the plant it will die or at least suffer visibly.

Community Gardens

by permafrog Leave a Comment

When it comes to gardening , much like other things in our lives, where
there is a will there is a way. If you want to garden and grow and
maintain your own food, flowers or herbs but do not have a space
suitable at home then a community garden can be the place where you can
set your gardening passion free.

Weeds?

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Weeds, if they were called by any other name would they still annoy
us to such a degree. The topic of weeds and weed control can touch off
a frenzy of discussion when gardeners gather.

Some
gardeners have little to no problem with weeds as they either use them
to attract beneficial insects to their garden, eat them,
