If you’ve read anything I’ve ever written on this blog, you know I’m a huge proponent of parents educating their own children, in addition to the time they spend in school. If your child is on summer break right now, or if they are too young for school, it’s important to begin and continue their education in a fun way at home.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. These fields are rapidly growing, and jobs in these areas often pay very well for recent graduates when compared with other majors. Plus, it’s fun for kids to experiment with the world around them and to understand how it works! But, you don’t have to go out and spend hundreds of dollars on telescopes, circuit boards, computers, and software to teach them. There are plenty of frugal ways to integrate STEM education in your home, just by going to the dollar store! Check out these awesomely cheap STEM activity ideas by Little Bins for Little Hands:
-Make a “Tinker Tray” full of interesting gadgets that kids can take apart and put back together. Include things like screws, nuts, bolts, wood blocks, wing nuts, toothpicks, paper clips, straws, and pipe cleaners.
-Make “oobleck” together (cornstarch and water)
-Start a seed jar
-Make marshmallow and toothpick towers- see how high you can build it
-Make a geoboard
-Take apart an old computer or other device together
