My nephew has recently entered into this delightful new phase where he hits people if he doesn’t get his way. Of course, we want to put a stop to that behavior as fast as possible. Putting him in time out as soon as it happens seems to be working- the hitting has been reduced considerably. However, we want to end it before it even happens. That’s why I love this post by Dayna at Lemon Lime Adventures. Here are her tips for putting a stop to toddler hitting:
-Be a calm, confident leader: they are not doing it to be evil or malicious, they are just trying out a new trick they learned and are trying to get a reaction.
-Stay close to prevent the behavior- gently block the hit, and tell them “I won’t let you hit, hitting hurts.”
-Enact logical consequences as necessary- take them home from playdates early, or use time out to show that hitting is unacceptable.
