Phone Apps to Consider for Home Office

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

I have two favorite apps on my smart phone – Words with Friends and Pocket Whip (thank you Howard Wallowitz for introducing that little gem).  However, if you have a home office there are several applications that could be invaluable for your business.

From Real Estate By Missy,

iAnnotate- this is an app that I use frequently to open an attachment, make changes, and then save in my dropbox files.
Scan2PDF: take a picture and it turns it into a PDF
Docusign: this is a great mobile version of the classic electronic signature program
Pages: This is Apple’s version of Word
Keynote: This is Apple’s version of Power Point

All of these are great suggestions.  Here are some of mine:

Mapquest – a free app that give audio directions.  Just plug in your charger because it will eat your battery life!

QR Reader – to read those pesky QR codes because I’m that nosy!

Bump – a wonderful way to share photos without eating up your data plan (both phones must have the app loaded)

Skydeck – a reverse phone number lookup service

Good luck!

Drop Shipping is a Home Office Option

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

Drop shipping is a real business opportunity for people who have done extensive research, have gumption, and a lot of luck.  Drop shippers are the middle-man of a product purchase.  They don’t make the item, they don’t store the item.  They simply sell the item through their own online store and then make sure it is shipped to the buyer.

To be successful in selling your products online, you must find a legitimate partner that can drop ship your customer orders and even warehouse your items. Do not just sign up with anyone because there are many scammers with empty promises.

MoneyedUp provides names of successful firms that use drop-shippers as its sales force.  Read the entire article here to learn more about this home office opportunity.

Fixing Your Cracked iPhone

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

I have had an iPhone for a couple of years and we got along just fine. No troubles. Very few dropped calls.  Until one day I was standing outside trying to collect fundraising money for a colleague who has cancer.  My husband called me and as I pulled the phone from my pocket, my fingers fumbled it. The phone fell and landed face down on concrete.

It is safe to say my screen was broken into about 125 pieces. That baby was shattered, so much so that I don’t think this little trick of repairing your own phone screen would work.  However if you are the crafty and patient type person and your phone screen is cracked, these instructions could be for you!  From c.r.a.f.t. creating really awesome free things,

I cracked my I Phone glass… twice. The first time I shattered it…the phone was unusable. The second time, it was at least still usable…see below. Both times, the BF came to the rescue! He is kind of a pro now 🙂 It takes 20 minutes (depending on crack severity), a few tools, a 10$ I Phone replacement glass, and p a t i e n c e!

Proceed through to read the very specific how-to, complete with photos!

The Before is My Reality

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

I love seeing office makeovers. In fact, a couple of ladies in our water billing department got tired of looking at our ugly kitchen and break room and gave it a face lift over the weekend.  Here’s the kitchen “after” picture:

Yes we have ugly orange cabinets, but the women found big old vases and plastic trays, and spray painted them black. They used them and cute silk flowers to accentuate the ugly orange and did a FANTASTIC job!

My own reality is much less glamorous. My reality is the before picture below rather than the gorgeous after picture. From the site called Better After,

Which is your reality?

An Attic Office

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

If it was an attic office at my parents house, I’d have to say no because the pull down stairs are not something I’d want to wrestle every day. However if you have a regular set of stairs, an attic office could be a great option for those who work at home.  From Better Homes & Gardens,

A quiet attic can provide the perfect opportunity to put an underutilized space to work. A long desk along one of the walls offers plenty of workspace for two people and is simply a tabletop mounted to a series of cabinets. The window in front of the desk provides natural light, while adjustable wall-mount lamps offer task lighting.

Lovely! Thank you BHG for sharing!

Small Businesses Can Survive, But…

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

I know plenty of successful small businessmen.  I can describe each of them with one word – TENACIOUS.  They all have a certain tenacity and stubbornness that gets them through day after day, week after week, month after month.  This is much what Funny About Money says regarding personality traits of successful small entrepreneurs,

The most essential trait a home business owner needs is self-motivation. No one is going to “make” you do what you’re supposed to do to earn money. You have to be able to get yourself going, and you have to keep yourself going, even when you don’t feel like. The ability to motivate yourself is vital for a successful home business.

What are three other personality traits? Read the article to learn more!

Social Business Cards Look Like Timeline

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

A start-up company won the Facebook contract to produce and distribute business cards to look like the social networking site’s new timeline.  Moo.com is offering to print and ship free business cards to the first 200,000 users – or approximately 10 million cards.

The cards can feature a different photo image on the front of the cards together with a favourite quote or saying on the reverse. This will doubly act as a promo for Facebook’s Timelime as people will be able to take snapshots of their lives from their Timelines and put them onto the cards.

Facebook spokesperson Jillian Stefanki says “The MOO.COM integration makes it possible for people to take [the Timeline] experience with them offline.”

Always suspicious, I went in and looked.  I was one of 200,000 so am getting 50 business cards for free! I didn’t like the profile picture it’s using, but for free cards I will live with it!
