Why Would You Want to Work from Home?

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

I have worked in offices. I have worked from home.  There are definite advantages of both.

When you work from home, you can stop in the middle of the day and take a nap. You don’t have to change out of your pajamas until sometime in the afternoon.  Brush your teeth whenever you want (of course you *should* want to right away!).

When you work in an office, you are constantly challenged to get the job done. You are in an environment where other people are dedicated to their own tasks and responsibilities.  You have the opportunity to interact socially and to brainstorm ideas and strategies.

Working in an office can be .. FUN!  From Cyrus Massoumi on Linked In,

Find ways to make work fun. While the occasional happy hour or Ping-Pong tournament certainly doesn’t hurt, there is a distinction between having fun at work and making work fun. Whether it’s including a funny Easter egg on our 404-page or rewarding success with a victory lap (cape and all) around the office, I’m always impressed by how innovative our team is at bringing happiness to their experience at ZocDoc. If the work you do brings a smile to your face and the faces of your colleagues, it’s a pleasure to contribute in person every day.

I look forward to Mondays, personally.  I like asking my colleagues how their weekends were.  I like hearing about their children’s performance in a play or about the family reunion.  I like going to the office!

Office Decorating Idea

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

In my office, I have a big frame of a window.  My intention is to bring it home, paint it black, and fill it with photos I’ve taken over the last few years.  But my colleagues argue that the black frame won’t look good on my brick wall.  And I don’t want to spend money developing large photos without knowing it’s going to look good.  This might be a good solution to test out.

Wall Picture Collage
Here are all the things that I bought.
(all found at walmart)
This entire project was under $20. My kind of project!
*pictures you want to use (I had free prints from Co
* 2 20×30 foam core boards (I got two black ones $2.88 each)
*poster hanger thingies ($2.44)
*foam brushes ($.97)
*double sided tape ($3)
*mod podge (I already had some)

Click through to “Bits of Everything” and read the directions. And here’s the final product!

Cleaning Your Keyboard

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

I always imagine that door handles, shopping carts, and light switches would be among the dirtiest things we touch with our hands. However, if you think about it maybe – just maybe – your computer keypad is fairly contaminated.  Here’s a quick tip on cleaning your keyboard,

… a little compressed air will go a long way towards getting the dust out of the cracks, crevices, and exhaust vents. If you have a Mac Pro, you can crack the case open and attack the inside with the same cloth and compressed air.

If your case or keyboard are seriously gunky, we highly recommend attacking the filth with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, but keep in mind that they—and other melamine sponges—are slightly abrasive, so you may be rubbing away grease and dirt, but if you keep scrubbing you can wear away the top layer of the finish as well.

While you’re at it, consider cleaning your desk phone. Those get nasty really quickly, especially if you wear makeup!

Wordy Wednesday: Home Office Decor

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

I was surfing through pinterest thinking I’d find a picture of a home office to share here today.  What really struck me was that every single picture seems to disingenuous.  There are tons of beautiful photos with offices decorated to match every taste – from rustic to elegant to pink to lime.  But how realistic is that?

In my own office, I still have binders here and there. I have stacks of paper situated from important to eventually.  I know exactly where my post-it notes are containing important information (from our company wireless password to the measurement of photos we upload to the website). I am proud that I have important business cards loaded in a business card portfolio. I refer to it regularly.

What about your office? Is yours perfectly decorated in a place where there are no drawers?  Or is it willy-nilly so you know where things are that you regularly work on?

Pretty office photo from pinterest.

Careful What You Do Working at Home

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

While the flexibility of working at home is wonderful, you should also be extremely disciplined to make it work.  Women & Co. takes a look at five huge mistakes women can make working at home, including:

Procrastinating with housework.
Yes, you can empty the dishwasher on your lunch break, or throw the laundry in the dryer between calls, but be careful not to let distractions creep into time you planned to work. Definitely don’t let people hear the familiar sound of clattering dishes on a call—it’s distracting and unprofessional.

Truly in my home, doing too much housework is not an issue! 🙂  (And please note that is not my house!)

Have a Bunch of Old Negatives?

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

This is a great product! I have about 2,000 old negatives hidden in the corners of drawers, stuffed in photo albums, and tucked in envelopes. Now I have something to do with them.  From Solutions: Products that Make Life Easier,

If film negatives seem like old technology, that would make slides downright archaic! But now with this easy-to-use film scanner, you can archive all those treasured photos and slides yourself—no need to take them to a photo lab and pay expensive transfer fees.

Fantastic!

Face to Face Social Interaction Missing

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

When you work at home, you might get to talk with people on the phone. You might get to sit in your pajamas*.  You might get to save gas money from driving to and from an office.  But you also might be missing face to face social interaction. If you are someone who enjoys talking with people, even if it’s just idle conversation like what happened on your favorite television show or who did better in a political debate.

Some people may just not be cut out for working from home. From Prairie Eco-Thrifter,

One of the biggest issues that many have with working from home is the social interaction. My husband likes social interaction, and he likes to feel as though he is helping people (this is why he is a university professor). He likes to go in, get to know the students, and help them with their assignments. Working from home doesn’t offer that same level of human interaction.

Before you decide to work from home, consider your social preferences, and imagine the isolation. Be realistic about your need for human contact, and take that into account as you make your decisions.

I like hanging out with people, personally, but alone time is also really good sometimes!

*Do not work in your pajamas if you work from home! You will be less motivated and – what if – someone comes over?!
