Turn Your Office Into A Coffee Shop

by Ron Hogan Leave a Comment

hipstersound

I love to work from home. If I could work from home every day, I’d set up a comfortable office space and never leave.  However, I went to public school, so I’m used to a lot of background noise.  Sometimes the TV works.  Sometimes it’s music or podcasts through my headphones.  However, it’s not the same as tucking into a booth at the local coffee shop and getting my work done there.  Enter Hipster Sound.

Hipster Sound is an ambient noise generator that recreates hipster environments, like coffee shops and piano bars.  I would love it if I could replace the sound of churning printers and fax machine beeping with the sounds of brewing coffee and mellow indie rock.  If it could somehow come with the smell of freshly-brewed coffee rather than, say, spilled toner ink or fish being microwaved, so much the better.

Unfortunately, it only works via the ears, and there’s no way to recreate the smell of a beach-side lounge quite yet, but it’s a good start.  I intend on trying this out at work tomorrow, and I recommend you do the same.  White noise helps us sleep, keeps us calm, and is generally very soothing; maybe the sound of a quiet coffee shop can help eliminate the difficulty of a work day.

Industrial Decor Idea: Pipe Pictures

by Kathy T.

Lately, I’ve been really into more minimalist designs in homes. I love neutral colors, and interesting textures like fur, wood, and metal mixed together. One idea I’ve liked recently that fits into that theme is this industrial style photo display by Heidi at Hometalk. She took an iron pipe, bolted it to the wall, and hung photo frames from it:

This is a simple project that can be completed in less than a day and materials cost us less than $50! These are the materials we needed to hang the frames from. A six foot length of iron, 2 elbows, 2 flanges, screws and anchors. To attach the picture frames to the iron pipe, we picked up some hose clamps, cup hooks and decorative chain.

Out Of The Box Storage Ideas

by Kathy T.

I’m a sucker for architecture and design that incorporates “hidden” elements. I’ve always wanted a swinging bookcase in my home, a cupboard under the stairs, and hidden trapdoors and passages. Sure, it’s kind of childish, but you have to admit it’s pretty cool! I still love all of those ideas, and there are lots of people out there who are bringing them into their homes. Check out this post by Peggy Wang at Buzzfeed for super cool ways that people have used hidden storage in their homes:

-Display your book collection under the stairs, or use the space underneath for storage

-Maximize your space with baseboard drawers

-Consider a hidden room behind a bookcase, or under the stairs

-Use platform beds for storage underneath

Toddler Apps

by Kathy T.

My spoiled, 2-year-old nephew got a tablet for Christmas this year 🙂 . He loves it, and it’s nice for us since he’s not constantly asking to borrow our phones. His mom put a bunch of games on it already: one that teaches about animals, one with songs, and one with letters and numbers. Hopefully, it’ll turn out to be a great educational tool that he can have fun with! If you let your 2 year old borrow your phone, or they have their own tablet, check out this post by Liz Borod Wright at Travelogged for the best apps for toddlers:

Old House Makeover Tips

by Kathy T.

Is your home 30 years old, or older? Does it have old school features like wooden wall panels, bad carpeting, and accessories as old as the home itself? Then it may be time for an update. This post is not an in depth guide to renovation and repairs: most of this stuff is purely cosmetic. However, upgrading old appliances and décor, and giving a place a fresh new paint job s important to giving it new life! Check out these makeover tips for old houses by Virginia at Live Love DIY:

-Sand down wood on floors, walls, trim, and doors- prep it for painting

-Paint everything in white or neutral colors!

-Remove closet doors to create open spaces

-Paint old furniture and change out hardware

Work From Home Idea: Professional List Writer

by Kathy T.

I’m sure I’ve written here before on how much I love making and maintaining lists- favorite books, life goals, future baby names, places to go, etc. If you are like me and love to keep your life organized, you could turn that into a career! There are many websites out there hiring people who can write informative and catchy “list” articles! If that appeals to you, check out this post by Anna at Real Ways to Earn for money making opportunities, and what each of them require:

Listverse – $100 per list

Cracked – $100 to $200 per article or list

Top Tenz – $50 per list

DIY Wood Wall….Using Stickers??

by Kathy T.

I love the look of wooden walls, but not all of us can live in a secluded cabin in the mountains. The rustic look is extremely popular right now- if you want it in your home, you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars knocking out your drywall and installing logs from Abraham Lincoln’s childhood home. All you need to get a nice wooden wall in your home is this tutorial by Ann Monroe at Momtastic. The best part is, it’s real wood. The other best part is, it’s “peel n’ stick”. Check out the post here for some gorgeous inspiration.
