DIY Banister Makeover

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

3455217304_d4e586a6ab_zStairways are often a neglected area for home improvement. You might hang a few picture frames on the wall, and vacuum the steps once a year, but that’s usually the extent of thought that goes into stairwell. However, it’s somewhere that we see and walk through daily, and it deserves to reflect your style, just like the rest of your house. One way to revamp your stairs is by giving the banister a makeover. Check out this tutorial by Cass at Remodelaholic for tips on how to completely redo the posts and handrails of your banister. Check out the full, detailed, photo tutorial here.

How To Add Text Art To Wood

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

24111292_3bdcd3d997_zA simple way to save money on furnishings is to buy them used and upcycle them. You can find furniture for cheap from thrift stores, or free online or from friends. Then, you can personalize them any way you like! Most upcycling tutorials I see involve sanding the old furniture, then painting it a new, fun color. Others have to do with re-upholstering cushions with brand new fabric. However, this guide by Diane at In My Own Style has an alternative way to upcycle furniture- by transferring printed text to the wood! Check out the amazing photo tutorial here. All you need is:

  • typography or an image file on computer
  • wax paper
  • ink jet printer
  • craft knife or scissors
  • 8 1/2″ x 11″ piece of printer paper
  • piece of cardboard or credit card

Creating A “Command Center” For Your Home

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

kitchen-command-centerWe all have that one place in our home where everything seems to end up: a junk drawer, the cluttered counter, or just the trash can. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a designated space for incoming and outgoing mail, spare pens and pencils, important school info, meal planning, and a calendar of upcoming events? Well, you just have to create one of your own! Check out this awesome post by Erin at How To Nest For Less to see how she built her own beautiful kitchen command center. She included:

-A large dry erase board calendar + a holder for markers

-Organizing slots for receipts, extra paper, pens, and bills

-Extra artwork for the wall

Creating An Accent Wall With Stone Or Brick

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

8362623363_8e38876ff2_zEver since I was little, I’ve loved the look of stone walls in houses. If it’s the entire exterior of the home, or just a stone wall over the fire, I think it makes the home look more magical, like a castle. (I also love homes with turrets, large libraries, and large wildflower gardens). For anyone not in la-la land like me, stone walls can lend your space a sense of masculinity, security, and classic luxury that never goes out of style. For tips on decoration your space with your own brick or stone accent wall, check out this list of tutorials by Kathy Woodard at Decorating Your Small Space:

“Senior Proofing” The House

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

7531312104_d6624caa0f_zWhen you’re expecting a baby, you’re supposed to “baby proof” your home. You cover up electrical outlets, bolt down heavy furniture, lock up medications and household cleaning products, and try to cover sharp corners of tables. Babies are basically wobbly, drunken little people, and will find a way to run into anything!

But, what if you have an elderly adult living with you? What if your 75 year old mom can no longer care for herself in her own home, so she moves in with you? Or, what if you find yourself getting older and more prone to injury? Seniors have fully developed brains and a lifetime of experience, so they won’t go sticking their fingers into outlets and go crashing into tables while running around. However, you still need to make sure that your home is optimized for their safety! According this article by Xavier de Buck at the Nortchcliff Real Estate Blog, the number one cause of death from injury in people over 65 is falling. So, what can you do to reduce the risk? Check out de Buck’s tips here:

-Clear walkways and remove excess furniture, especially in narrow areas like hallways and entryways

-Install handrails, especially on staircases if you don’t already have them

-Install extra lighting throughout the house

-For the bathroom: add an elevated toilet seat and/or a grab bar by the toilet

-Widen narrow areas and add ramps for wheelchair access if needed.

Wall Washing 101

by Shakadoo Leave a Comment

133739755_b0a1e9c773_zMost people rarely wash their walls, if ever. I think the only time I have is if a spill or something happens. However, walls can get super messy- fingerprints, oils, grease from cooking, furniture scuffs, and yes, splashes and spills. But there’s no need to get on a rickety ladder and scrub your walls with a sponger– now there’s an easier way. Read these tips by Sarah at Life Should Cost Less if you are planning on washing your walls anytime soon:

All you need is a sturdy large pad mop (this is the one that I use)and your choice of multipurpose cleaner in a spray bottle (a bottle filled with warm water and maybe a drop or two of soap works too).  Work top to bottom, left to right, and gently spray (more mist than stream) the wall down with your cleaner of choice. Apply some pressure and literally mop the wall.
