How to Get Rid of a Tree Stump

by Kathy T.

Trees are a beautiful necessity for any yard. But sometimes, for whatever reason, they have to go. They may have been damaged by extreme weather, or be in the way of a future construction (like a shed or home extension). The worst thing about trees is how much of a pain they are to remove– especially the stumps. However, worry no more! This post at the Family Handyman shows an easy way to get rid of annoying tree stumps– without a lot of backbreaking work:

  1. Remove as much off the top of the stump as you can with a chainsaw.
  2. Drill vertical holes throughout the stump
  3. Buy a can of stump remover and pour the granules into the holes.
  4. Wait 4-6 weeks- the remover will decompose the stump and it will become spongy. Then, you can chop the rest of it away with an ax or burn it.

How to Stain Concrete

by Kathy T.

Always wanted a flagstone path in your garden or yard? Have some spare concrete lying around? Try out this trick from Hometalk. They used Ironite (found in lawn fertilizer) from any hardware store, coffee grounds, and vegetable oil to stain the concrete.

The total project was under $15 and looks just like real flagstone for a fraction of the cost. The whole process is only two steps and all ingredients are safe and nontoxic, and the final result looks amazing! Be sure to click through to Hometalk to see the entire tutorial, including before and after photos.

Beauty is Everywhere

by Kathy T. 1 Comment

My brother lives in an area that’s often shady, often cold. But he finds beauty everywhere in his yard and in the surrounding woods.  From Jomegat,

As I headed back to the house, I walked by the tiny flower bed we have on the north side of the house. A couple of years ago a friend of mine brought in a plant that he had found in the woods. He wanted to know what it was, and I didn’t know off the top of my head. I did some research and determined that it was Downy Rattlesnake Plantain (Goodyera pubescens).

Ironic that plantain bananas grow in tropical climates, but this downy rattlesnake plantain clearly thrives in the cool.
