Playing and Fun Tricks Are Great for Bonding

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

I was so mean to my daughter last night. We have an ice storm coming near us in the next 24 hours and we saw on TV that a couple of school systems were already closing.  So when she turned her head, I squealed, “Our county is closed!” I didn’t make her believe it too long (perhaps three seconds) before I started laughing and said, “JK!”

I love fun tricks like that with kids. I figure if nothing else it will help their own personalities be interesting as they reach adulthood!

This is why I nearly fell over laughing when I read my brother’s post about what he does to his daughter – tricking her into telling her about a house that used to be a train depot.  Here’s an excerpt,

About once per month when we drive by this old train station, I trick Beth into letting me tell her that this house used to be a train station. Usually I say something like, “Oh yeah! I forgot to tell you something important.” She’ll usually (but not always) take the bait, saying “What?” That’s when I spring it on her. “This house used to be a train station!” It elicits deep groans every time. When I got back from my hike today she asked me if I’d play Uno with her, and I took the opportunity to do this again. I had my laptop on my lap after just having downloaded the day’s photo haul. The photo above was on the screen. I said, “OK, but first I need to show you something on the computer.” She came and sat down beside me and I sprung the dreadful phrase once again. “This house used to be a train station.” “DADDY!” Ha ha.

It sounds like we all inherited that same ornery streak!

Delusions of a Beautiful Baby

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

I have several friends who have brand new babies. When I see them I usually mutter how “sweet” they are or that they have beautiful eyes.  What I don’t say is “how pretty!”  Because – frankly – they are not. In fact some are so unfortunate looking that I’ve gasped when I’ve seen them.  Really.  I won’t swipe their pictures from Facebook (and believe me facebook is covered up with pictures of unfortunate looking babies).  Instead, I’ll just link to this interesting article from NBC News.com,

No doubt there’s an evolutionary biology explanation for my new-baby goggles (the equivalent of beer goggles for a woman who hasn’t had a drink in nine months). In prehistoric times, women who thought their babies were amazingly beautiful may have been a little more attentive and a little less likely to feed a crying baby to a saber-toothed tiger. Thus, children of mothers with the beautiful-baby delusion would be more likely to survive and pass on their delusional DNA. Call it survival of the cutest.

I heard once that babies typically look like the father so – back in “cave man days” – the father would bond with the infant and try to protect it.  Maybe the daddies were unfortunate looking, too.

Rent Igloo to Watch Northern Lights

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

This is fabulous. If you want to look at the Northern Lights in the luxurious comfort, head to Finland and rent a glass igloo! It’s true! You can!  From Buzzfeed,

Built from a special thermal glass the temperature inside the igloo always stays a normal level. It also prevents the glass from not getting white frosted, hence keeping the view clear even when the temperature outside drops to under -30°C. Every igloo is equipped with a toilet and luxury beds.

This is amazing and if I was a rich woman, I’d be there!

Laughing at Dogs

by Kathy T. Leave a Comment

I usually shake my head at my own dogs at how incredibly dumb they are.  The big dog will not go to the sunroom if the door is slightly closed or if she has to walk around something. The laminate floor in the kitchen apparently spooks her as she’s afraid she’ll lose her footing.

If my dogs were the least bit funny, I’d probably laugh at them like Aunt B. laughs at Mrs. Wigglebottom,

Yesterday, the dog got stuck under the camper, which is stuck under a tree in our back yard. And somehow, eventually, she wiggled her way out the far end, instead of just turning around and exiting the way she’d come. Who even knew her hips could still flex like that?

And, really, they can’t. She tried to go for a walk this morning, but we got to the shed and she was like “Ugh,” and I was like, “Ha ha.”

Ha ha indeed!
