Microfiber Cleaning Tips

by Kathy T.

Microfiber couches are extremely comfortable and usually go great in any space. The only drawback to them is how notoriously tough they are to clean. If you have pets or kids (or both!), stains can accumulate easily and quickly on any microfiber upholstery. Even if you DON’T, microfiber is known to just start looking grimy after a while. Luckily, this post by Julia at 551 East Design has a great tutorial on how to remove microfiber stains easily and with common household products. All you need is some subbing alcohol, a sponge, and a bristle brush.

How to Deep Clean Your Shower

by Kathy T.

Cleaning the shower is NOT something I look forward to. It’s awful to admit, but that’s probably why I only do it maybe two or three times a year. My logic is, you’re pouring soap and water down it all the time– so it’s clean, right? Wrong. But, besides it being not fun, cleaning the shower has the added drawback of being pretty difficult. Removing soap scum and other icky things with plain old household cleaners just isn’t going to cut it. That’s why this post at 23 Imaginary Friends is so helpful— and best of all, no scrubbing involved! Check out their recipe for the perfect shower cleaner:

1/2 c. white vinegar

1/2 c. Original Blue Dawn Dish Soap

4 T. Baking Soda

Empty spray bottle (or skip this and use a glass measuring cup)

Bathroom Organization Tips

by Kathy T.

Bathrooms can be one of the most difficult spaces in the house to get organized (next to the kitchen! Yeesh!). Often, it’s a very small space that needs to contain a lot of products. Toilet paper, towels, soaps, shampoos, toiletries, hair supplies, and cosmetics? Usually, the dinky space under the sink is just not going to cut it when you have a thousand bottles of goop and no place to put them. Jennie at Craft-O-Maniac has some great ways to store your bathroom junk, all while looking stylish and un-bathroomy. Check out this entire post at her blog for her amazing before and after pics, as well as some creative storage solutions.

Cleaning Hacks that Will Save Your Life

by Kathy T.

Have you ever just looked at a mess in your home and thought, “Now, how in the world am I going to clean THAT up?” You know what I mean. Sharpies on walls. Wine stains on white carpet. Heavy electrical appliances used for cooking that obviously can’t be thrown in the dishwasher (old crockpots? Toasters? Waffle irons? Griddles?) Well, luckily for you, this huge post by Anna at My Life and Kids has ways to clean up just about every common (but tricky) household spill, stain, or mess. The best part? They often just use other items around your house. Check it out!

Here’s how to get rid of permanent marker from hardwood floor:

Put a dab of white toothpaste on the marker.

Then rub like crazy with a damp washcloth or paper towel. (I like to use my microfiber cloth.)

And you’re done!

How to Make Your Fridge Look Like New

by Kathy T.

Sure, all of us go through the fridge and clean out the old/expired food every so often (right?? I hope so anyway.) But it’s really easy to ignore stains and spills on the shelves and walls. They’re just going to be covered up with food again….who cares if it sticks to the bottom of everything? Yuck. While it’s understandable that your fridge might look like this (mine definitely gets to that point every once in a while!) it’s an incredibly easy fix. Courtenay at Creeklinehouse has a great tutorial:

Go through your shelves one by one and start taking out whatever doesn’t need to be in there any more. If it’s a pot full of leftover soup, just leave it on the counter, if it’s trash, put it in the trash.

Now grab any liquidy stuff that you weren’t able to get rid of in the trash (like that pot of soup) and dump it in the toilet. Am I the only one who does this? Well, you should do it too. It’s weird, but it works! Do a little wipe here and there. Put things where you want them. That’s it! Your fridge is done!

Making Your Cookie Sheets Shine Like New

by Kathy T.

It happens to all of us, even the best of housekeepers. Over time, cookie sheets (and metal bake-ware) just get yellowy and gross looking. The combination of cooking spray, constant use, and grease just tends to build up, especially in the corners. You ignore it and throw it in the dishwasher anyway, because hey, who cares? You’re just going to put foil over it next time you cook. Well, Jill at OneGoodThingByJillee has found a way to make them sparkle like new:

As I stared at the pans I wondered how my “miracle” cleaner would work on these.  A couple of weeks ago I shared how the “miracle” of baking soda and peroxide had pretty much changed my life. 😉

Well, ok, that’s a bit of an exaggeration…but I was FLOORED at how well it works on pretty much everything in my kitchen. It even worked on my long-neglected cookie sheets and pans! For corners and harder to clean areas, simply use some goo-be-gone!l
