Helping Your Kids Have A “Natural Childhood”

by Kathy T.

I’m considered as a millenial. I grew up in that weird intersection of technological advancement; half of my childhood was spent outdoors, playing, swimming, and getting dirt all over me. The other half was spent watching TV, playing video games, texting on my phone, and exploring the internet. All in all, I did have a really great time growing up. And I do have some great memories that involved technology- playing Kingdom Hearts with my cousin until dawn, listening to music on my Ipod on the bus home sharing an earbud with a boy, making a Myspace with my best friend in high school, and meeting friends online that I still have today.

However, almost all my best childhood memories come from being outside: building outdoor forts, riding bikes, going camping, playing with my dog, catching fireflies, making smores, swimming in my best friend’s pool, heading to the playground, softball in the summer, running after the icecream truck, jumping off my cousin’s rope swing, making igloos and having snowball fights in the winter- I could go on. Now that smart phones and flat screens and high speed WIFI have taken over completely, lots of kids are not getting a lot of those same memories. If you are trying to limit your kids’ screen time and get them outside more, check out this awesome list of outdoor activities by Cerys at Rainy Day Mum:

-Roll down really big hills

-Go camping in the wild

-Make a mud pie

-Skip a stone in a lake

-Fly a kite

-Make a daisy/flower chain

-Visit a farm

-Go star gazing

-Plant a seed, grow a vegetable, and eat it

What To Bring To The Beach With Toddlers

by Kathy T.

14106263299_7dd041db3d_zMy two-year-old nephew went to the beach for the first time last week! He had a blast, but was more interested in playing with sand and rocks than the ocean. Still, he had a great time! If you are taking your toddler to the beach soon, make sure you’re properly prepared with the right items. To keep your toddler happy and safe, check out this packing list by Katie M. Mclaughlin at Pick Any Two:

-2 bathing suits

-Sun hat with wide brim

-Kid-friendly sunscreen

-Snacks

-Sand toys

-Hand sanitizer

-Towel, blanket

-Umbrella

“No Spend” Activity Ideas

by Kathy T.

14404820065_d5d8052503_zReserving a week (or weekend) of “no spending” is a great way to save lots of money for a goal. You do not spend any money except for bills, groceries, and gas. It may seem boring, but there are tons of things you can do for free. In fact, your kids don’t even need to know that you are on a “no spend” weekend. Check out this awesome list of free activity ideas for kids by Chonce at My Debt Epiphany:

-Have a yard sale

-Watch movies, or play video games

-Take a walk or go for a jog

-Visit a local historical location

-Organize a scavenger hunt

-Head to the library

DIY Bouncy Balls

by Kathy T.

9223462675_a0df4dc9b3_zI love finding interesting crafts and kid science projects; it’s part of the reason why I’m addicted to Pinterest. I hoard all those cool ideas so that one day I can do them with my nephew, or maybe even my own kids in the future. One of the coolest ideas I’ve seen lately is this tutorial for glow in the dark, homemade bouncy balls by Crystal at Growing A Jeweled Rose. It looks super fun! Check out her recipe and full instructions here. All you need is:

  • 1/2 Tsp of Borax
  • 4 Tbsp of Corn Starch
  • 4 Tbsp of warm water
  • 1 Tbsp white glue
  • 1 Tsp Fluorescent or Glow in the Dark Paint

Fun Science Experiment: Soap Clouds!

by Kathy T.

If you’re like most parents, this is the point of winter break where you and your kids are getting a little stir crazy. It’s too cold to do anything outside, and Christmas is over, so there’s not a whole lot to do. The excitement of new toys has probably worn off, so it’s time to do something new! Check out this awesome (and educational) boredom buster by Sara at Our Best Bites. All you need to make these poofy clouds is ivory soap and a microwave:

-Place the entire bar of soap on a piece of wax paper or paper towel

-Microwave on high for about three minutes

-Watch it expand!

-The end result is not messy or wet, but will crumble if you smash it. It can still be used as soap, and it’s fun to take the entire cloud into the bath!

Ways To Use Baby Wipes

by Kathy T.

Baby wipes are seriously magical. I didn’t know how magical until I lived with a baby, but those things have a million uses. They can clean up any mess that babies make, you can use them as makeup removers, toilet paper, or even magic erasers. Seriously. Go get a pack of them right now, even if you don’t have a baby. Check out this post by Jillee at One Good Thing By Jillee for more uses for baby wipes:

-Wipe down the inside of your car

-They get sand out of everything! Bring a pack to the beach

-Remove pen, pencil, and crayon from any surface

-Substitute “tide pen”- wipe makeup and deodorant stains off clothes

-Clean off pet paws, noses, and fur

-Temporary frizzy hair tamer

Creative Food Ideas For Halloween

by Kathy T.

When Halloween rolls around, there is one thing that kids look forward to: lots and lots of candy. They get a whole hoard of it when trick or treating, they probably get some from school or friends, its marketed at stores and in ads, and many of the Halloween related snack ideas I see online are for sweets. Which is fine! It’s what the holiday is about: getting into a little bit of mischief. However, it’s important for kids to get SOME fruits, veggies, and protein in addition to the massive amounts of sugar they will be ingesting. That’s why I’ve put together this list of spooky snack ideas that I’ve found on Pinterest- no candy needed. These are great to make for a Halloween party, or just to send with your kid as part of a school lunch:

Tangerine Jack O’ Lanterns

Hot Dog Mummies

Spooky Deviled Eggs

“Boo”nana Pops

Pretzel and Cheese Broomsticks

Jack O’ Lantern Veggie Tray

Halloween Cheeseburgers

Spider Pizza

Super Gross Guacamole

Jack O’ Lantern Quesadillas

Graveyard Pudding Cup

Halloween Fruit Cup

Cheesy Mummy Celery Sticks
