Pothos

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Pothos or (Epipremnum aureum) is a very easy plant to grow, great for the beginner. It grows fast and has waxy heart-shaped leaves that may be green or variegated in colour.

AKA, the Devils’ Ivy, its vines can be trained up a window frame or allowed to cascade down a hanging basket.

Spider Plant

by permafrog Leave a Comment

The spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is an easy to grow plant that will do very well in most light, temperature and moisture conditions.

The spider plant is considered by some to have the ability to cleanse the air by absorbing a number of dangerous chemicals, thus making it an indoor helper as well as adding beauty to the room.

Forget the Rules the Design is Yours

by permafrog Leave a Comment

There is only one hard and fast rule when it comes to creating a garden and that is right plant, right place. This means that if you want the plant to flourish you must be sure that it gets the light and water that it needs, plus the soil that you plant it in is able to provide the food the plant needs.

Other than that your garden is a reflection of you; so toss away all the other rules and have some fun. Mix colours and sizes if that pleases you. You do not have to plant a garden in a straight line or inside a bo x, circles, ovals and figure 8s will work as well if not better.
There is one other element to being a happy gardener and that is : make sure your lifestyle matches the garden you wish to have.

If you have only a few spare minutes a day, do not plant a garden that requires constant attention. go for native plants that can, for the most part, look after themselves once they are in place. Keep the garden small , perhaps a container or three.

What To Do Until the Catalogues Arrive?

by permafrog Leave a Comment

This is the time of my gardening discontent. The seed catalogues have not yet arrived; if they had I’d be busy making notes, all the while promising myself that I would not buy anything because I really do not need any more seeds or plants. Of course the next step would be filling out at least one order form.

So today I took a stroll around the blog verse trying to find out what others are up to.  At the As The Garden Grows there is an good article about Canadian gardening magazines. I usually stop my the public library to flip through gardening magazines but maybe it is time to susbcribe, it could help pass the time.

Researchers Stimulate Photosynthesis and Design Better Leaf

by permafrog Leave a Comment

A research team from the University of Illinois has built a better
plant using a computer model that mimics the process of evolution and
they are the first to stimulate every step of the photosynthesis
process.

Photosynthesis is how plants algae and phytoplankton convert light
energy into chemical energy Photosynthesis, for the most plant takes
place in the plant’s leaves and involves an elaborate array of chemical
reactions requiring dozens of protein enzymes and other chemical
components.
