Annuals

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Some gardeners want nothing to do with annuals, you need to plant them every year, while others are simply passionate about the possibilities. Annuals provide a wide range of season long colour, shape and size and give the avid gardener an opportunity to make changes, even within the same season.

Cosmos is one of my favourites.

The Balcony Garden

by permafrog Leave a Comment

While I was blog surfing today I came across the Balcony Flowers blog. The post reminded me of living in Thunder Bay and the balcony garden we had. For several years we traveled regularly throughout the Summer, often we were only away for 2-3 days at time, but plants in containers, and out on the balcony may need more care, especially watering than plants in other locations do.

Our balcony was high up and exposed to strong winds. it also got very hot in mid July through to mid-August which was our prime time to travel.

If our neighbor had not been so generous with his time we could never have kept such a lush and productive garden.

Container Gardening

by permafrog Leave a Comment

Growing flowers, herbs and vegetables in containers is an excellent
way for anyone with a small space, such as a balcony, to grow their own
plants.

Containers work well on deck, steps and
patios by allowing you to add colour, shape and fragrance to your yard
without taking up much space.

The Fragrant Garden

by permafrog Leave a Comment

There is one element that we often forget or perhaps take for granted when designing our gardens and that is fragrance.

The garden can not only stimulate the eyes and the mind it can bring
a wealth of delights to that often neglected organ, the nose.

There
are a number of plants that can enhance your garden not only with their
physical beauty but with a fragrance that captures your attention as
you sit on the porch or in the yard or while wandering down the garden
path.

There are two things that you need to remember when designing a
garden. Pay attention to both and you will create a space that you and
your family can enjoy.

The first one is simple: It’s your garden. You do not have to please anyone else with your plant choices but yourself.

Everyone Can Garden

by permafrog Leave a Comment

I view the garden as the place where Civilization and Nature meet.
The garden’s job is to maintain the balance between the two forces so
that the garden and all that is in it thrives.

You
can start to garden at very early age and carry on until you pass on to
another existence. What makes this possible is design.
