I don’t think my own geeky children could tell a better story than this.

Seeing Mom As A Whole Person
There’s been much made about the pressure moms feel from society and then the backlash of the “bad moms”. Jaelithe sums the whole kit and caboodle up well with her post about the situation, describing her own mother alternately as a woman who rocked hardcore and also had her faults.
It makes me think about how people see only one tiny little bit of who a person is on the internet and then has their minds made up about whether that person is a good parent or not. I suppose if you read every post I’ve ever written on the internet, including those that are locked to friends-only and those that are so old you can’t find them anymore, you might be able to form a good opinion on who I really am. But you still wouldn’t KNOW me or whether or not I’m a good mother. As a matter of fact, nobody can, since I alternate between good mother and bad mother all the time.
I think we all do. I think some mothers are better than others just as there are others who are significantly worse. But for the vast majority of us in the middle, we’re all good moms and bad moms every day. It just depends on which way the wind happens to be blowing at the time.
Flushed Puppy: This Is Why You Should Supervise Young Children With Animals
A young child, thinking he was giving a small puppy a bath, instead flushed the puppy down the toilet. Miraculously, the puppy survived, and was found in a sewage pipe. This, friends, is why you should always supervise your young children around animals. The puppy is lucky to be alive. So’s the kid, ha, if it was my kid. Of course, my kid would have been supervised.

Measure Twice, Cut Once
My dad has a coffee mug that says “Measure twice, cut once.” Sage advice, advice I wish I had listened to this weekend. I needed a shelving unit to go in my laundry room. I eyeballed the space and then went to the store and picked up a shelving unit that I figured would fit.
As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, no, it didn’t fit. I missed it by about 2 inches. Sigh. I could return the shelving unit, but I’m probably just going to turn it another direction that it will fit in. Which is why I didn’t bother to measure, since there are 2 directions I could have fit the unit in. Still, I wish it fit in the way I wanted it to.

Fear Of Power Tools
I remember as a child, my parents did a lot of woodworking projects. I hated every minute of it, from going to the very boring and hot lumber store, to when they would fire up the power saws and start to work.
It was the loudness of them that bothered me the most, but I was also very afraid that they would hurt themselves with the power tools. That fear has carried with me as an adult. Seems I’m not alone.
What Possesses Some People?
This, from the UK: a man in a park witnessed some boys kicking a fawn to death. You have to wonder what causes people to perpetrate this kind of cruelty on an animal that cannot defend itself. The gentle hippie inside of me wonders if these youths were not abused themselves and were just acting out. The realist in me says there’s no excuse.
What do you think? Do people harm defenseless animals for a reason, or are they just cruel people? What do you think should happen to these kids if they’re caught?
