Laying Around In Bed To Encourage Independence?

by badbadivy Leave a Comment

Sleeeeepy puppyOver at Slate, Tom Hodgkinson explores the idea of idle parenting. I tend to agree with his idea of making kids be more independent by having a lay about every now and then. I think it is no coincidence that my oldest son, who spent some time growing up with me as a single mother, is the most independent of all my children.

Most of the kids of single moms that I know are similarly independent. There’s just so many hours in the day and only so much one human being can do. So many kids of single moms learn early to do some taking care of themselves. My oldest son started out making his own lunch, which fostered an interest in cooking. At 15, he makes better eggs than anyone else I know. And that’s just a small bit of his cooking repertoire.

Obviously, you have to make sure what your kids are doing is age appropriate, but how about letting them take over some of the work?

If you feed Nutro, you might be interested to learn that the FDA is investigating many claims that the food is making their pets sick. There are no conclusive results at this time, so there may be no need to switch foods or get worried. However, it’s good information to know.

A Florida Gardener’s Garden

by badbadivy Leave a Comment

I love to see what gardeners in other parts of the country are doing with their gardens. This one is a gardener in Florida. They’re so much farther ahead than we are in Tennessee! Go to the LJ gardening community for more pics and a video.

Abandoned Manor House

by badbadivy Leave a Comment

It’s like something out of a fairy tale- an abandoned manor house built in 1799 in Ireland. The photos are few, but wonderful. It reminds me of a dream.

Old Dog Vs. New Dog

by badbadivy Leave a Comment

Photo: Newscoma on Flickr

Tiny and Kitty have finally settled into what I can’t exactly call a friendship, but it’s no longer the outright dislike that they once had. I take them outside and Kitty romps while Tiny stands guard. I’ve never seen a dog that likes to stand guard as much as Tiny does. Kitty finally understands that Tiny doesn’t want to play, so instead of playing with him, she’s decided to just play near him. It works for them.

Tiny’s been an old man ever since I got him when he was three years old. He’s never gotten the concept of playing- he prefers just to pile up in your lap and let you pet him, or he’ll stand guard, ever watchful of stray leaves or neighbors mowing their lawns. Kitty loves to play, so I finally get to indulge my urge to buy lots of dog toys.

Do you have an old dog and a new dog? How do they play together?
