This is the week where my daughter and I visit colleges from all around our area to figure out which one she likes best. From my point of view, I want to know where she can get a quality education that costs the least money out-of-pocket.
Today we went to a college with a largely minority population. What that means is that my daughter would be the minority at that school. It was a beautiful campus, but I was disappointed we never had the opportunity to talk with an actual employee, admissions counselor, or financial aid expert. Instead, a man came into the lobby where our tour group met and said, “Hello! Thank you for coming today! We’ll be walking around campus in about five minutes. Except it won’t be me.”
Then a young man – a junior majoring in marketing – came out and introduced himself. He told us his grandmother had just passed away so he apologized in advance just in case he forgot to tell us anything. We walked around the beautiful campus and then back to the student union building. And that was it. No offer to talk with anyone else. That really was it.
I think it’s a lovely school and I understand the student was grieving, but my thought is that the school might have just let him work inside that day and allowed someone else to lead the tour so the young man could process his grief.
I just left feeling a little underwhelmed.
