It’s kind of like being a golf widow, being a band mom. My oldest kid went from being generally available to never being home. They rehearse on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and then Friday is the game and Saturdays are competitions. Add to that, my kid’s active in my church youth group and I barely get to see him in passing.
I get all kinds of email from the band boosters asking if I could help in various setups and takedowns. I’d love to, but the problem is my younger kids. They can’t watch themselves, and they’re not exactly old enough to be helpful. One’s old enough to stay out of the way, but the other…mmm, no. So I miss out on those chances to at least be close to my oldest son.
We’re working toward a goal here, though. Music scholarships to college, and just the general enjoyment he gets from playing his bari sax. I keep telling myself that, but the truth is, I miss him.
