Cats are great pets! I love dogs too, but I definitely consider myself more of a cat person. They’re really popular with people who are just starting out on their own. They’re pretty easy to take care of and are adorable companions. But, just because they’re a little more chill than dogs, doesn’t mean that it’s gonna be a cake walk! They’re just like little kids that need to be supervised (especially if you have a kitten) and they are a responsibility. So, if you think you want a cat because you just want a cuddle buddy that you don’t need to take care of, think again! Ask yourself these questions before going through with it:
-Are your finances in order? This isn’t just kitty litter and food. Do you have enough in your budget to pay for vet expenses like shots, spaying, or neutering? Adoption fees? To pay a pet fee for your apartment? To pay for emergency vet visits? To pay for damages if they’re really hyper and destructive? Sometimes cats can be more of a handful than dogs.
-Are you emotionally and physically ready? One of the appeal of cats is that they’re pretty low maintenance. You just have to change their kitty litter, and make sure they have food and water. But, while some cats are incredibly laid back (and couldn’t care less about you), some crave attention and demand constant affection. If you have a job which leaves your cat at home alone for the majority of the day, it might not be for you. If you are also easily upset by cats destroying things (blinds, curtains, shower curtains, potted plants, cords that can be chewed, furniture) and cannot discipline them without violence, you may also want to reconsider.
Kitties are very loving, affectionate creatures! Taking care of them can be very rewarding and it isn’t a job to be taken lightly.
